But how do the advantages of LED lighting actually benefit campers? And more importantly, how do we get the most out of their benefits? Knowledge is power, and when it comes to camp lighting, the more you understand LEDs, the more money you’ll save. So with everything from the basic fundamentals of 12V LED lighting, to the essential tips and advice from right across the country, lets clear the fuzziness around 12V LED lighting and make your next campsite the safest and most practical it can be.

HOW LEDS WORK

Before we jump in the deep end, let’s have a look at how LEDs actually work and what makes them such amazing bits of camping gear. The term LED, actually stands for Light Emitting Diode. These diodes basically disrupt the flow of electricity by bouncing the electrons around to create light. The light that is emitted is actually the release of energy as the electrons combine with electron holes. The lack of moving mechanical parts is often referred to as solid-state construction, which is largely where LEDs get their durability and reliability from. In a nutshell, LEDs are just tiny little light bulbs that fit easily into an electrical circuit. However, when compared to a traditional light globe, they have the advantage of not having a filament, which will inevitably burn out at some stage.

DURABILITY AND LONGEVITY

If there’s one thing we rely on heavily when travelling Australia, it’s tough and durable camping gear. This is where LED lighting excels. Their robust nature initially comes from their solid state design, which basically means there’s a lack of moving parts, making them perfect for the rigors of outback touring and off-road applications. After all, the more moving parts, the more things to break. LEDs don’t rely on filaments or gas charge so they don’t generate much heat in comparison to conventional globes. Less heat means less wear and tear resulting in a much longer lifespan. A quality LED light will be fully sealed from water and dust contamination with an IP rating of 68 which is the highest there is. The combination of a robust design, quality parts and a fully sealed LED construction means there’s no reason your LED purchase can’t last you a lifetime.

TOP TIPS – BUYING CAMPING LED LIGHTS

It’s a good idea that whatever camping gear lighting upgrade you make, you ensure the lights are dimmable. This gives you more control over the light’s intensity making them much more user friendly, plus they won’t use unnecessary power.

Look for a beam angle that spreads around 120 degrees. This generally offers the best performance for camp lighting.

Magnetic LEDs are perfect for securing to tent poles around the camper.

Pay close attention to how the cables are connected to the actual light bar. The outer insulation should be put into the epoxy for additional strength.

LUMENS VS LUX

LED lighting generally determines the amount of light output that flows from the source by using the measurement of lumens. The term lux is basically used to measure the light’s actual intensity. So, if you have a light source producing 1 lumen, and you measure the light’s intensity over one square metre, it would be rated to one lux, which is roughly one candle power. To put this into perspective, full daylight has roughly 10,000 lumens, which is also 10,000 lux when limited to one square metre. However, if you were to spread the same 10,000 lumens over ten square metres it would only actually produce a light intensity of 1000 lux or the equivalent of 1000 candle power. This means that the lumen rating on your LED lamp is actually the amount of light produced by the source, not the intensity of the light or its relation to a particular distance. Understand these terms and you’ll have a much better chance of buying the right camping gear to suit your needs.

There’s nothing better, than a true-blue Aussie camping adventure!
