They’re strong, durable, tough yet light weight considering how much shelter they instantly provide. And what’s even better is that they’re so easy to setup too! Thousands of campers around the country are already using the Adventure Kings camping gazebos to upgrade their campsite. However, if you’re camping in windy conditions then you definitely need to take a bit of extra precaution, because that massive amount of shelter can turn into a serious wind break in the wrong situation!

Securing your camping gazebo in windy conditions isn’t hard, and can be done a number of ways. If it’s done correctly, then you’ll have no dramas at all. In fact, we’ve camped on the top of sand dunes down in Tassie when 30 knot winds have blown up during the middle of the night, and our 3x3m Adventure Kings gazebo was perfectly fine! Here’s six quick steps to help you secure your gazebo so it’s ready to stand up to whatever nature can throw at it.

PEG IT FROM THE BOTTOM
The first thing you should do when you set your gazebo up, is to peg the feet into the ground at all four or six legs. Each of the heavy-duty aluminium feet on the Adventure Kings 3x3m or 6x3m gazebos comes with peg holes as standard. For maximum strength, use two pegs per foot to really ensure that the feet are properly secured into the ground. This is the most important first step as it ensures the frame can provide resistance against the wind.

ROPE IT FROM THE TOP

Once the feet are pegged into the ground, the next step is to secure the gazebo by using the included eyelets and guy ropes from each of the four corners of the cover. These eyelets are re-enforced so they’re ultra-strong, and what this does is use the cover as a second way of securing the entire gazebo to the ground. Typically you’d go out at 45° angles from each corner with the guy ropes, but in extremely windy conditions it’s even advisable to add a second guy rope to each corner to double your ability to secure the gazebo.

DON’T FORGET THE ELASTIC CLIPS

This one’s a vital step! The little plastic clips on the lengths of elastic are there to help secure the cover to the frame in between each of the legs. Make sure that you fit each one and that it’s nice and tight, because you don’t want to leave any unsecured part of the cover for the wind to pick up.

USE THE RIGHT TYPE OF PEGS FOR THE TERRAIN

If you’re camping in sandy terrain, then do yourself a favour and invest in a whole bunch of sand pegs! Normal pegs just don’t cut the mustard when it comes to soft, sandy terrain as they don’t have the ability to grip the terrain like normal. Sand pegs have a wide plastic body that provides resistance when driven into soft, sandy terrain. Remember to angle the sand peg so the body goes across the direction that the rope comes down from.

SECURE IT WITH EXTRA ROPE THROUGH THE FRAME
In extreme conditions, it’s sometimes even advisable to carry a 20m length of nylon rope to secure the frame of the gazebo to a vehicle. It’s all about creating multiple points to secure your gazebo down, rather than relying on one or two points. Start by positioning a vehicle next to the gazebo, and the typing the rope down low to a bullbar or side-step. Run the rope up through the frame, out to the other side of the gazebo, across the opposing length of the gazebo and then back to the vehicle. Secure it to a wheel or the like and make sure it’s nice and tight!

USE DUCT-TAPE TO SECURE MULTIPLE GAZEBOS OR AWNINGS TOGETHER

This final step sounds a bit dodgy, but it genuinely works well! If you’ve got multiple gazebos or even a gazebo and awning to join together, use a bit of duct tape to secure the legs to one another. In addition to all the methods listed above, this will lock the gazebos or awnings together and provide extra resistance against wind.

The Adventure Kings 3×3 gazebo and 6×3 gazebo are both such incredible bits of gear to add to any campsite.
