Why A Roof Mounted Solar Panel is An Amazing Vehicle Upgrade

When it comes to camping solar power, you can never have too much, because you can never rely on the sun being out when you want it to be. That’s why a combination of a permanently mounted camping solar panel and a portable solar panel works so well. In fact this setup is so effective, that it can run a fridge permanently!

The Adventure Kings 110W and 160w fixed solar panels for camping are ideal for mounting to a roofrack on top of your 4WD, or on top of a trailer. We’ve mounted them to the roofrack many different types of vehicles, and then run the cabling down the A pillar and into the engine bay. Inside the engine bay there’s an Adventure Kings PWM solar regulator. This setup means that the auxiliary battery is constantly receiving a charge, whether it’s from the solar panel, or via the Adventure Kings dual battery smart isolator.

When you’re at camp and you’ve got lights and an inverter drawing more power from your battery, you want an extra boost of solar power. That’s where a portable solar panel like the Adventure Kings 250W Solar Panel comes in. Just clip it straight to your battery with the included regulator, and it’s now getting charge from two solar panels!

It’s important to note that because the Adventure Kings portable solar panels all come with their own regulator, you must connect the wiring from the regulator straight to the battery. Connecting from the regulator to another regulator will prevent it from working properly.

And now you’ve got the best of both worlds! A constantly-charging roof mounted camping solar panel that requires no attention, and a portable camping solar panel that lets you chase the sun as it moves across the sky. And the best part is, you can grab both a fixed and a portable solar panel from 4WD Supacentre, for way less than most other camping stores charge for just one!

Here’s how to take your camping setup off the grid, using incredibly affordable 12v gear and camping solar panels from Adventure Kings, Australia’s leading camping  brand!

Many campers are hesitant to make the move away from powered campsites, but the good news is you don’t have to leave the luxuries of home behind, when you leave the crowds behind.

It all starts with the Adventure Kings Battery Box. This clever bit of gear features multiple USB sockets, power outlets, terminals and even a handy battery meter so you can keep an eye on how much power you’ve got left at any time.

Simple add either the Adventure Kings 98Ah or 115Ah AGM battery, connect it to the Battery Box and you’ve got a portable power station to run your camping fridge, lights, phone, tablet and more!

Want to keep your battery charged at camp? Any of the Adventure Kings 120W, 160W, 200W or 250W camping solar panels with in-built regulators plug straight in, and deliver free power any time the sun is shining.

Need a powerful but compact camping solar panel option to go with your roof mounted camping solar panel? You just can’t go past the Kings 200W Folding Solar Blanket.

The Adventure Kings 200W Solar Blanket is a cracking bit of gear that can easily harness the sun’s power and turn it into free energy when you’re camping. It’ll keep your battery topped up even when you’re running your fridge all day!

In full sun, this powerful solar blanket for camping can produce 10.86A of power every hour. That’s about 4 times what a fridge will use, meaning you can run your fridge, AND recharge your battery at the same time.

But what’s even better about the Adventure Kings 200W Solar Blanket, is when you’re packing up camp, it folds away so small that you can fit it in your drawers! Plus it’s light too, so it’s never a hassle to set it up or pack it away.

The Adventure Kings 200W Solar Blanket is incredibly powerful, yet packs up amazingly small too. It’s a must-have bit of camping gear this summer!

Adventure Kings Solar Blankets are essentially maintenance free. The only thing you’ll need to do every now and then, is give it a wipe over with a bit of warm soapy water mixed with a couple of drops of mild dishwashing liquid. Never use harsh chemicals or flammable liquids as this can damage your solar blanket.

This cleans off the dust that accumulates on the solar panel cells when the blanket is being used.

If you live near the sea or do a lot of coastal camping, the terminals inside the quick-connect fittings may build up a little corrosion over time. If that’s the case, use two small flat-bladed screwdrivers to remove the cabling from the plastic housing. Ensure the solar panel is inside its bag so it doesn’t produce power while you work on it.

Push down on the retaining tang with one screwdriver, and use the other to wiggle the terminal free. Repeat for the positive and negative terminals on all connectors. Do not pull on the cabling as this can cause it to dislodge from the terminal.

Using steel wool or a scouring pad and a bit of penetrating spray, clean off the corrosion until the terminals are shiny. This will ensure your camping solar blanket has a proper connection and will transfer proper power.

Refit those terminals taking note of the red cable going to the side of the plastic housing with the Plus or Positive sign, and the black cable to the side with the Minus or Negative sign.

Use a flat-blade screwdriver to push the fittings into place, and ensure they sit centered within each side of the housing.

Finally, give the cabling a wipe-over and check for any cuts or nicks, repair if necessary and your Adventure Kings Solar Blanket is ready for more faithful service!
