ULTIMATE WEEKEND ESCAPES! – Part 1

December 15, 2017   |   By ULTIMATE WEEKEND ESCAPES! - Part 1 - image on https://news.emgcloud.net/news

Let’s have a look at some of the best spots to roll a swag out this weekend!

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

They get some of the best ocean sunsets in the world, and WA has some stunning campsites and tough as nails tracks to explore!

BRUNSWICK SOUTH WEST WA

WHY IT’S A CRACKER OF A WEEKEND DESTINATION:

Only about a two hour drive south from Perth, out the back of Brunswick around the Harris River State Forest there are a couple of awesome tracks which are well worth spending a weekend checking out. The town of Brunswick is small but has everything you need.

WHAT THE 4WDING IS LIKE IN THE AREA:

What are the tracks like? There are some tough low range tracks in this area, like some muddy hillclimbs and deep ruts, so be prepared to give your 4WD a proper workout!

MODIFICATIONS NEEDED: a good set of mud terrain tyres, some suspension and barwork as well as a winch and at least one locker are ideal if you are into your tougher 4WDing.

CAMPING AND FACILITIES:

There are a few spots to roll the swag out and you can just find a spot you like and go with it. For some cracking riverside camping, check out Honeymoon Pool.

BEST TIME TO VISIT: JUNE – AUGUST

NEAREST SUPPLIES/ FUEL: BRUNSWICK

MAKE SURE YOU CHECK OUT: Head up to Harvey, which has some cracking 4WDing around Harvey Dam which is well worth checking out.

TOP TIP FOR VISITING THIS AREA: Make sure your winch works! There are some gnarly tracks around this area and it’s not hard to find something to test your skills on. Having a few mates along is also a smart idea for some extra fun and to use as a recovery truck if needed.

NEW SOUTH WALES

With the Great Dividing Range offering some tough as nails low range tracks, and stunning beaches all the way up the coast, NSW has some unreal 4WDing!

BLACKSMITHS BEACH

GPS: 33°02’10″S 151°41’10″E

ULTIMATE WEEKEND ESCAPES! - Part 1 - image Capture-8 on https://news.emgcloud.net/news

WHY IT’S A CRACKER OF A WEEKEND DESTINATION: Blackies is an awesome spot to setup camp and relax on the beach for the weekend. It also isn’t too far to head toward the Watagans state forest if you’re into your tougher 4WDing.

WHAT THE 4WDING IS LIKE IN THE AREA:

Blackies is beach driving at its best because the sand is notoriously soft particularly around the entrance to the beach so you really need to concentrate, ensure your tyre pressures are correct and be mindful of tides. There are also a few bogholes out behind the dunes.

MODIFICATIONS NEEDED: A quality set of tyres are a must as the sand on Blackies is incredibly soft.

CAMPING AND FACILITIES: Camping around third creek is a cracker of a spot close to the water but it can get windy if you have an offshore breeze.

FACILITIES: NO

RATING: 4/5

FEES: $$

BEST TIME TO VISIT: ALL YEAR, BUT THE BEST TIME IS SUMMER

NEAREST SUPPLIES/ FUEL: BELMONT

MAKE SURE YOU CHECK OUT: Depending on the swell Blackies is a cracker of a spot for some beach fishing or a swim, but be mindful as it’s quite an open beach so rips are common and the swell can get pretty big. The North Coast also gets a few sharks depending on the time of year, so maybe stick to the shallows or stay out of the water if you’re worried.

TOP TIP FOR VISITING THIS AREA: Correct tyre pressures are essential as the sand is mighty soft. Blackies can get pretty popular on the weekends and during holidays, and naturally that invites grubs who leave their rubbish behind. If you are heading to Blackies for the weekend, take your rubbish with you when you leave. You also can’t drive on the dunes on the south end of the beach, so stay away from them if you don’t want a fine.

VICTORIA

There is so much to see in the High Country that you’d probably never see it all.

WALHALLA

GPS: 37°56’18″S 146°27’03″E

ULTIMATE WEEKEND ESCAPES! - Part 1 - image Capture-9 on https://news.emgcloud.net/news

WHY IT’S A CRACKER OF A WEEKEND DESTINATION:

Walhalla is possibly the most picturesque High Country town there is. It’s the gateway to gold country and there are so many tracks and places to visit that you will want to just keep coming back. All the tracks in this area are drivable and well looked after.

WHAT THE 4WDING IS LIKE IN THE AREA:

The tracks here aren’t very difficult, but they’re a heck of a lot of fun and there definitely are some challenging sections to test your skills. Like everywhere in the High Country there are also some steep ascents and descents, but you are rewarded with breathtaking views pretty much wherever you go.

MODIFICATIONS NEEDED: A mild suspension lift, some quality tyres and a bullbar and a winch for insurance are all you need to explore this area as well as some camping gear. You won’t need to try hard to immerse yourself in the rich mining history in the area

CAMPING AND FACILITIES:

FACILITIES: YES

RATING: 4/5

FEES: None

BEST TIME TO VISIT: OCTOBER TO JUNE

NEAREST SUPPLIES/ FUEL: RAWSON OR MOE

Head North to Lake Thompson where there are tracks and campsites everywhere. O’Tooles campground is a huge site on a river, but there are also plenty of other sites in the area if you’re up for a bit of exploring.

MAKE SURE YOU CHECK OUT: Check out Pheasants track near GPS: 37°46’25″S 146°23’19″E which isn’t tough, but very scenic.

TOP TIP FOR VISITING THIS AREA: Make sure you pack plenty of warm clothes as the High Country weather can change very quickly.

SOUTH EAST QUEENSLAND
Sensational weather all year round and chocker block full of awesome campsites and insane tracks to air down for, Queensland has it all!

TEEWAH BEACH

GPS: 26°09’44″S 153°05’39″E

ULTIMATE WEEKEND ESCAPES! - Part 1 - image Capture-10 on https://news.emgcloud.net/news

WHY IT’S A CRACKER OF A WEEKEND DESTINATION:

Teewah beach is deadset one of the best beaches to camp on in Queensland. The beauty about it is that it has heaps of spots back up on the edge of the beach to roll the swag out pretty much all the way up. It can get pretty busy particularly in the school holidays, so make sure you stick to normal road rules on the sand, and use your indicator to alert oncoming 4WDers which side you intend to pass on. If it’s a cracker of a weekend getaway for some fishing and top beach camping you’re after, then Teewah is the place to go!

WHAT THE 4WDING IS LIKE IN THE AREA:

It’s all beach driving here, so a quality set of tyres aired down to correct pressures is essential.

MODIFICATIONS NEEDED: A good set of tyres, a tyre deflator and a compressor are ideal for getting on and off the beach as the southern entrance can get pretty soft

CAMPING AND FACILITIES:

FACILITIES: NO

RATING: 4/5

FEES: $$ (Vehicle access permit and camping permit required)

BEST TIME TO VISIT: ALL YEAR ROUND

NEAREST SUPPLIES/ FUEL: NOOSA

There are heaps of spots to roll a swag out right up the beach, so it won’t take long to find a cracker of a spot. You need to get a vehicle access permit and camping permit to come here, which you can get from

qpws.usedirect.com/qpws

MAKE SURE YOU CHECK OUT: Head right up to the end of the beach to Double Island Point for some spectacular views of the coast

TOP TIP FOR VISITING THIS AREA: Remember that you are driving on a beach and ensure you respect the area. Not just from a rubbish and etiquette point of view which is obvious, but this area has claimed a few 4WDs over the years due to changing tides and soft sand. It pays to be prepared.

THEY’RE OUR TRACKS

While these areas all feature awesome tracks and stunning campsites perfect for a weekend escape, just remember that they may not be there if we don’t look after them. Take your rubbish with you, drive conservatively and don’t wreck the tracks and remember to respect this amazing country, wherever you go. It’s our backyard, let’s keep it that way so everyone can enjoy it, now and in the future.
