Throw another prawn on the barbie? Don’t mind if we do! This recipe is GUARANTEED to be a hit around the campfire or the dinner table!

These incredible satay prawn skewers are so addictively good that you’re going to want to make them time and time again. Lucky they’re so quick and easy to make, because you’ll want to make these again, and again, and again…

The term ‘throw another shrimp on the barbie’ is synonymous with Aussies, but the irony is that Aussies usually much prefer to cook up steak or sausages in favour of seafood. That’s going to change though, once you taste these amazing satay prawn skewers!

The beaut part is that preparation is in fact incredibly simple and easy. This dish uses some very basic ingredients all mixed together to make a beautiful mild satay sauce, and then you simply prep the prawns using your Adventure Kings Camping Chef’s Knife Kit by shelling them ready to cook.

And when it comes to barbies, you can’t get a better barbie to cook this amazing meal on, than the Voyager Portable BBQ from 4WD Supacentre! You want a decently high heat for this recipe, and you want to get in there and get some nice heat and good char marks into the prawns to make them look as amazing as they’ll taste. Just start your Voyager, set it to full temperature and pop the lid down to pre-heat it nice and hot.

When you’re ready to add the prawn skewers, pop them on one at a time along with a healthy dose of olive oil so they char without drying out and burning, and re-close the lid. About 2-3 minutes is all the first side needs, then you can just flip each skewer and cook for the same amount of time on the remaining side before you’re ready.

We used beautiful King Prawns for this recipe, as they’re big, juicy and fleshy – exactly what we’re looking for. Allow three to four skewers per guest if you’re cooking them as a main, or 1-2 per person if they’re being served as an entrée.

Here’s a beaut tip for serving as a main! Heat up a packet of pre-cooked rice in its un-opened bag by bringing a large saucepan of water up to boil on your Voyager Portable BBQ. Drop the unopened bag of rice in and let it heat for about 5min, remove, open and distribute onto plates. While it’s heating, whip up a bit of extra satay sauce, lay your satay prawn skewers out on top of the rice and finish with sauce. Those who love a bit of heat will enjoy some freshly chopped chilli on top.

Serving suggestion: kick back in your favourite Adventure Kings Camp Chair and eat as the sun goes down on your favourite camping spot. It doesn’t get any better than that!

What you will need:

  • Gasmate Voyager Portable BBQ
  • Prawns
  • Peanut Butter (crunchy is best)
  • Fish sauce
  • Soy sauce
  • Curry powder
  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Cornflour
  • Basting brush
  • Skewers

The Sauce/marinade: Take your Peanut butter, fish sauce, soy sauce, curry powder, garlic, ginger and cornflour in a bowl and mix thoroughly. Add a little water as needed to thin the sauce out. Add a finely chopped Chilli if you like a little extra heat. Its’s ready for your pawns!

Prawns, the highlight: Take your prawns and remove the head like so. Using your thumb, follow from the legs around the body to remove the outer shell leaving the tail. Place a few prawns at a time in the satay bowl and mix about until covered. Repeat until all prawns are done, cover and let marinade in the fridge for 30 mins. With your skew for prawns onto each skewer like so. If you are using wooden skewers, hot tip, soak them in water for about 20 mins to avoid burning them, and now we are ready for the Voyager!

Cooking your prawns: Set the voyager to high and allow to preheat. Wipe down your grill with oil using a paper towel. Add prawns directly onto the grill. Grill 2-3 mins each side or until prawns become a light Orange colour.

Enjoy!
