When heading out in your 4WD it is important to make sure you are equipped with all of the essential 4WD accessories that will help you get home all in one piece, after a fun day on the tracks!

There are no hard and fast rules for what gear you need to bring with you but by packing your 4WD with gear that can help you out in the case of getting stuck, or in the case of breaking something on your 4WD, by being prepared you will have a much more enjoyable time on the tracks, so we are going to share with you all the best tips and tricks for choosing the essentials you need on the tracks!

TOOLS OF THE TRADE!

One of the first things you need to include in the back of your 4WD is a set of tools, this can be anything from a custom-built toolbox including all of your favorite spanners and screwdrivers from the shed. Or if you are like us, you prefer to have a purpose-built toolkit like the Adventure Kings Bushmechanic tool kit!

By always bringing a quality tool kit on the tracks, no matter what happens, you’ll always be able to get your 4WD back up and running, to make sure you and your passengers don’t get stuck in the middle of nowhere!

Recovery Gear

If you are a tech head like us, you’ll love getting setup with all the newest recovery gear available on the market.

With everything from MAXTRAX MKII traction aids, to a top of the line Domin8r X 12,000lb Winch with all of the new bits of gear, you must consider all of the necessary accessories required for safe offroad recoveries!

Whilst a winch may seem like an all-in solution to recovering your 4WD, you will find that a winch is practically useless unless you include a recovery kit like the Hercules Essential recovery Kit.

This kit includes;

Snatch Block, 8,000kg

Snatch Strap, 8,000kg, 9m x 60mm

Tree Trunk Protector, 10,000kg, 3m x 75mm

Extension Strap, 5,000kg

2 x Bow Shackles 4.7T each

Winch Dampener

This awesome Hercules kit will let you setup a recovery with over 24,000lbs of pulling force (over 10 tons of force) and with the included winch dampener you’ll be able to improve the safety of your offroad recoveries!

However, if you were looking for an even more comprehensive recovery kit you can pick up a Hercules Complete recovery kit which includes:

Snatch Block, 8,000kg

Snatch Strap, 8,000kg, 9m x 60mm

Tree Trunk Protector, 10,000kg, 3m x 75mm

Extension Strap, 5,000kg

2 x Bow Shackles 4.7T each

Winch Dampener

Folding Shovel

Kwiky Tyre Deflator

Heavy Duty Gloves

Recovery Bag
With all of these extra components you’ll have everything you’ll need to free your 4WD, with a shovel and even a Kwiky Tyre Deflator for even more control over your tyre pressures!

PORTABLE AIR

Bringing a reliable source of compressed air with you whilst you are offroad is a very good idea, whilst most of the time you can get by without dropping your tyre pressures, if you do head offroad, you’d be wise to lose a few PSI. By reducing your tyre pressures you do 3 things.

Firstly you improve your offroad grip, by reducing pressures your sidewall of your tyre carcass is allowed to flex, exposing more of your tyre tread to the track surface, this increased surface area results in less downforce, meaning your vehicle will tend to float above the softer terrains offroad.

An Additional benefit of reducing your tyre pressures is the reduced likelihood of tyre punctures, by allowing the tread to conform to the surface of the track!

The third reason you should let your tyres down is the reduced erosion on the tracks, whilst you have more grip you will tend to spin your tyres less and this will mean the tracks are less likely to get closed down by the people with authority!

Using a Kwiky Tyre Deflator is one of the quickest and easiest ways to drop your 4WD’s tyres by using an easy to read gauge you can see the pressure your tyres are at as well as how quickly the pressures are dropping!

Once you are done offroad, and its time to hit the highway, you MUST inflate your tyres back up to highway pressures, if you attempt to drive at speed on offroad pressures, you have the potential to destroy your tyres and also to roll the rubber off your rims, resulting in a catastrophe!

This is why a Thumper MKII portable air compressor is so critical to bring with you when venturing offroad, by always having the ability to get your tyres back up to pressure and rolling at the highway!
