Night time 4WD recoveries – Made simple with Adventure Kings

June 5, 2018   |   By Night time 4WD recoveries - Made simple with Adventure Kings - image Capture-12 on https://news.emgcloud.net/news

When leading a 4WDing expedition through tough tracks, whether you like it or not, you are more than likely going to need to do a recovery or two, and if you are anything like our mates, these can take hours, meaning you are more than likely going to have to take part in a night recovery or two!

This idea may daunt new comers to 4×4 recoveries, however, taking part in a night 4WD session recovery is one of the most exciting ways to learn the ropes, so to speak. So pay close attention we are going to give you a handful of pro tips straight from the horses mouth.

1.Lighting

This seems obvious, and you are probably thinking that your 4WD is already fitted with headlights, and they are bright enough….  Right??

Unfortunately, due to many manufacturers including headlights that offer reasonable performance when you are on the flat surfaces typically found on the road. Once you start encountering deep ruts, undulating terrain, and deep mud puddles and washouts you may encounter, the standard lighting offered by your 4WD will feel a little lacking.

As a bit of a better idea your standard H4 halogen headlights may put out between 600 and 900 lumens with fresh globes, this will give a range between 80m & 100m if you are lucky, when considering a set of aftermarket led lights like the Domin8r LED Lightbars from Adventure Kings or the Brand new Domin8r 9” LED spotlights you are looking at upwards of 20,000 lumens, with ranges exceeding 800m, and a spread around 150° illuminating everything in front of your vehicle.

Some people also choose to install a waterproof and bright 6” LED light bar on the rear of their vehicle to illuminate the track behind them, if wired to a switch you can toggle these on and off as you choose, however if you also want these can be wired to switch via a relay to come on with your reverse light making rearward vision much easier when trying to maneuver on the tracks!

  1. Recovery gear

Using the right gear for the job will make a massive difference to the speed of recovery and mean that even though you may be having a fun time offroad, you can get to camp or get home much faster than spending time sitting on the tracks waiting for a mate!

Recovery gear ratings can be confusing, however it is important to also engage in safe practices as on occasion a recovery may also fail along with the gear you are using, due to misuse or shock loading that can take place when you don’t use safe recovery techniques.

To ensure your recoveries are safe, it’s a good idea to always use a recovery dampener on any metal components you may be using in your recovery setup. Recoveries can be extremely complex so ensuring you are well practiced to engage in a daytime recoveries will help you out quite a lot. As when your vision is not clear, and the hour getting late fatigue may impair your judgement on the safety of a setup.

By including a Hercules Complete Recovery Kit in your setup you always make sure that you have what you need to get your 4WD free of any track obstacles. No matter what the conditions are throwing at you. Coupled with a rated electric winch like the Domin8r X 12,000lb winch or the Grande MKIII 12,000lb winch, offroad recoveries are made very easy!

3.Currency.

Trackside currency isn’t talking about money, it works like  bartering, if you have something that someone wants or needs, and they perform a service, such as pulling your rig free, you owe them something of equal value.

In the bush that is typically an icy cold beer, so making sure you are stocked up in icy cold beers to pay back your mates for their recovery expertise is a wise move, as IOU’s won’t convince them to help you for very long.

We always bring our Kings camping fridge when tackling tough tracks, and make sure that it is loaded with beers and chilled to a cozy +2°C for frosty refreshments, that you can hand to your mate to finish later at camp or when you get home! (don’t drink and drive) the perfect finish to any good offroad trip is to share a beer and debrief about the highs and lows, this will make sure you remember every little bit of your epic adventure!
