Winching is a great way to pull your 4WD free from trouble on the tracks, considering how much winches used to cost, many people haven’t realized how big of a difference they can make to the performance of  your 4WD when you hit the tracks.

But not everyone likes getting out of the vehicle to hook up their winch controls, so if you are a DIY kind of person we have the perfect solution to having full control over your winch, making your Domin8r Winch fully operational from within the cab without ever having to hook up your cables, allowing you to easily and quickly reel your winch cable in and out from the comfort of the drivers seat.

To start off we need to disconnect our winch cable using our winch cable isolator, or by removing the ring terminal from your battery. Once we are sure all power is disconnected from the winch control box, we can begin to access the solenoid within, unbolt the control box from its permanent location, and remove the bottom backing plate, to access the terminals of the solenoid, to be able to trigger and control the solenoid, from remotely.

You will find that inside the Adventure Kings there are 3 ring terminals on the side, and one red cable connected to the positive input to the solenoid. These 4 terminals are what powers and controls the direction of your winch when connected to the winch control handle provide the signal for directing your winch in and out.

By taking some heavy rated 4 core wiring you can directly connect the corresponding colours to their likeness, our 4 core has Red, Yellow, Blue and Black, where the standard control box wires are Brown, Black, Yellow and Red. As long as we know which colour has been substituted you should have no troubles with wiring everything in your cab.

By connecting the correlating wires to the 3x matching colour terminals directly on the side of the relay and with an inline fuse between the Red wired terminal and the red wire on one side. The best way to fasten your 4-core wire, to each bolted terminal is to affix a suitably sized ring terminal, using a ring terminal crimping tool like the crimping tool found in the Adventure Kings Bush Mechanic Tool Kit and by taking a little heat shrink tubing to cover up the connections.

Once these are all fastened you can reassemble your winch control box and begin to route the 4 core cable through towards your vehicles firewall and through one of your rubber gromets into the vehicles cabin.

With your cable connected to your winch control box, and routed into your vehicles cab, it is time to locate your switches in a convenient location, we need at least two switches, one missile switch as an isolator this will prevent bumping it on when you don’t need it, and next up is the rocker switch for paying out cable and winching it back in.

With the red cable being the powered line, we need to wire in our switches, this will depend on the many styles of momentary switch available to you as to the exact sequence of hooking up the terminals will vary depending on the arrangement of the terminals.

There are many options when choosing a switch, but our preferred style is the pop in rocker switches that are available for most makes of vehicle, they require no tools to insert simply pop out a blank and insert the switch, you can also get blank wiring sockets so you can quickly remove and reinsert the rocker switch, by unplugging just one connection.

You will also need to install an isolator, so you don’t accidentally begin winching in or out when you just wanted to change the radio station. Our preferred in cab isolator switch is a large toggle switch and a flip down cover, these are the ones that look like missile switches and are really cool to operate, but also have the practical function of not being able to accidentally switch on, additionally when you flip the cover down it will trigger the toggle and isolate the winches power.

It is best to follow the recommended wiring instructions from the switch manufacturer and consider if you would like your winch switch to light up when activated, once these factors have been decided, then hooking up your winch is as simple as connecting the 4 core wires to the appropriate terminals, on

Before you fully clip into place and engage all switches into the blank panel slots inside your vehicle, it’s a good idea to do quick a test run of your winch and ensure that all connections are tight and fastened into place and everything is in the correct order.

Head to your battery isolator, reconnect the cable and jump back into the cabin of your vehicle. First flick your internal isolator switch, and then momentarily hit the winch out button on your toggle switch to see if your winch motor engages, if you have someone who can act as a spotter to make sure your winch is winding in and out the correct way for the arrangement on the rocker switch labels, with everything tested and all of your terminals tightened its is time to click the switches into place ready for your next trip away.

Before you pack everything up, remember to isolate your winch by twisting your winch isolator near the battery, secure your winch control box and you are ready to rumble!
