FRASER ISLAND CHECKLIST

October 5, 2017   |   By FRASER ISLAND CHECKLIST - image 161006-FraserDVD-Driving-33-of-346 on https://news.emgcloud.net/news

Everything you need to know before you head onto the world’s biggest sand island!

WHERE:

Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island. At a whopping 123km long and 25km at its widest point, Fraser Island is one of Australia’s iconic destinations visited by thousands of 4WDers each year. Fraser Island is situated approximately 300km north of Brisbane on the east coast of Queensland. Ferries run from both Rainbow Beach and Maryborough across to the Island.

CAMPING:

There are a number of campsites along the beach front as well of several inland and privately owned campgrounds. Good camping spots are Cathedrals on Fraser, Dundubara, Central Station, and Waddy Point.

SUPPLIES AND FACILITIES:

Cathedrals on Fraser camp ground has a brilliant camp kitchen and water taps near camp sites. Treat water first before drinking. General store, fuel, hot showers, flushing toilets and coin operated laundry services are available.

WHAT TO TAKE:

Be self-sufficient with food and water because supplies on Fraser Island can cost a lot more. Ensure you have adequate recovery gear including snatch straps, shovel, air compressor, tyre gauge and traction aids, as it’s only a matter of time before you get stuck, or you come across someone that is.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL:

The best time to visit is from September through to May. Avoid school holiday peak times as it can get congested.

FUEL AND SUPPLIES:

Fuel is available on the island, at Cathedrals on Fraser.
(At time of trip)
Diesel $2.10/L
Petrol $2.02/L

TRIP STANDARD:

Trips are rated A through to E, with A meaning only suited to vehicles with an extreme level of off-road modification and E meaning perfectly suited to all types of 4WD vehicles. This trip is rated D. Fraser Island is regarded as suitable for 4WD vehicles, even with trailers in tow. Inland tracks are a little more difficult, as they are quite chopped up and can get soft in places. There’s also the odd deep water crossing.

MAPS AND GUIDES:

Fraser Island, by VMS

RESTRICTIONS AND PERMITS:

Camping permits and vehicle permits must be purchased and displayed on your 4WD at all times. Camping is coordinated by the QPWS and the vehicle permits can be purchased online or at your ferry departure point.
