EASY DIY wiring Installation

September 28, 2018   |   By EASY DIY wiring Installation - image Capture-20 on https://news.emgcloud.net/news

Have you ever wanted to upgrade your vehicle with bright LED Lighting, but are intimidated by installing the wiring?

Over the last few years, there have been many advancements in DIY LED Lighting upgrades, and also the technology for installing them into your vehicle, there used to be a certain level of assumed knowledge of electrical wiring – but things have really advanced, and circuitry has become so much easier to install.

The Adventure Kings Smart Wiring Harness offers the home DIY installer a much simpler way to just plug and play their LED lighting setup.

The clever wiring harness only needs to be powered by your vehicles battery, and piggy back onto your vehicles high beam light bulb plug, and then connected directly to your brand new LED lights waterproof deutsch plug and you are good to go.

Whilst wiring your new light harness can seem daunting we’re going to take you step by step with both getting your new lights mounted, and subsequently wiring them in for massive amounts of LED light output blasting out the front of your vehicle – so stay tuned!

Step 1 – Unboxing

When you get your brand new 9” Osram LED Driving Lights they include all the mounting hardware you need, as well as including an Adventure Kings Smart Wiring Harness.

The box should include the following;
2x 9” LED Driving Lights

2x LED clear driving light covers (Kings logo)

2x Steel mounting brackets

4x plastic

4x Large mounting screws (2x per lamp)

4x Small mounting screws (2x per lamp) to stop up down movement.

6x Heavy duty mounting bolts, washers, lock washers and nuts.

1x Smart wiring harness (includes H4 + HB3 adaptor harnesses)

With all of these components you are ready to install your new lights to your vehicle!

Step 2 – Mounting your lights

To mount your brand new LED light’s you need to assemble the lights onto their mounting brackets, keeping the fasteners tight but with a small amount of play to allow for adjustment later.

To mount your brackets, locate the four large mounting screws and the 4 plastic spacers. With your LED driving lights face down on a soft towel, align the plastic spacers with the threaded holes in either side of the driving light and position the driving light bracket into place.

With the lock washer and flat washer located on the bolt thread the bolt down until the lock washer is lightly compressed.

The small locking screw can now be inserted with the respective locking washer and flat washer in place.

Step 3 – Locating the wiring

With your lights positioned it’s time to start the installation of your Smart Wiring harness, begin with identifying the connections on your wiring harness;

You should have two heavy duty cables, on red and one black, these are your power terminals, you should also have a small black box (4 pin relay) attached, along with a 2 position switch which needs to be mounted inside the cab.

There is also 2x headlight adapters (one H4 and one HB3) you only need one, so determine which one is suitable. Finally there is a waterproof deutsch plug to connect to your new LED lights.

With all parts identified, lay your wiring harness out over the top of your engine bay, making sure your engine is stopped and that isn’t hot to touch.

Choose a route for the cables that avoids hot and moving parts under the bonnet whilst the terminals can reach the battery and everything looks neat and tidy.

Step 4 – Connecting everything up

With the wiring in place it is now time to connect up all of your terminals. Start by removing the inline fuse on the wiring harness. If you remove the fuse you’ll eliminate the possibility of shorting anything out.
Simply loosen your battery terminal bolts and insert the open-ended wiring terminal into place, RED goes to positive or (+) and black goes to negative (-).

Work out which wiring adapter you require most 4WD’s use H4 but many modern lights use HB4 globes, simply disconnect your, factory headlight plug from your high beam bulb, and connect your piggy back harness to the factory plug and your headlight globe, this piggy back harness can then plug straight into your smart wiring harness.

The next step is to disconnect, the terminals on the back of your rocker switch, this is so you can pass the wires through your firewall, you should make a note of which wires are connected to which terminals, this will make sure that you can connect everything back together on the other side of the firewall.

Find yourself a suitable location for the switch and reconnect all of the wire fittings to their respective locations.  We recommend taking a photo before disconnecting everything.

The job of puling the wires through the firewall is made much easier by passing a coat hanger through the firewall from the inside of the cab then using electrical tape, fasten the plug ends to the coat hanger and pull them back through the firewall.

Finally you can plug your waterproof deutsch plugs into your LED driving lights and you are ready to test everything!

Step 5 – Testing

Now everything is loosely routed and all connected up, go over every connection and ensure that everything is nice and snug, now finally you can attach your fuse back into its socket and test out your brand new lights.

Older harnesses could be tripped up if you were installing them into “negatively switched vehicles” this is where the Adventure Kings smart harness steps into it’s own, it automatically senses the circuit switching style, and makes sure your lights switch on correctly.

Simply turn on your headlights to low beam, your LED driving lights shouldn’t switch on, now flick your headlights to high beam, and automatically you should see the LED Lights blast a massive amount of light!

TROUBLE SHOOT– If your LED driving lights aren’t triggered instantly when you hit your high beam, you should firstly double check the toggle switch is set to on. If this doesn’t work you can check that your relay clicks when you switch your high beams on. If nothing else you should check all of your wiring connections *don’t forget to check your fuse in case this is your problem.

Step 6 – Tidy up

You aren’t done yet, this bit is the bit many take for granted, the tidy up.  With everything operational you should find a neat place to tuck all of your wires away, without forgetting to fasten your relay to a pre-existing fastener under your bonnet, and cable tying wires into place ensuring they wont vibrate or move, even on tough roads.

Step 7 – Adjust your lights

You can now adjust your lights to point in the right direction, with your car on a level surface, you can take a builder’s level and get everything squared up and fastened down snug. To adjust them for optimal light projection you should find a long straight road, and angle both lights to point slightly to either side of the track, this will give you the maximum amount of spread, also keep in mind that heavy loads in the rear of your 4WD will tend to point your driving lights upwards so for longer trips you may need to adjust your lights to be aimed a little bit downwards.

You are ready to roll, get out there and explore the tracks, with the confidence to hit the tracks at night time with your brand new Domin8r 9” Osram spotlights for epic amounts of light both on and off the tracks!
