DIY INSTALLATION – Fitting your Adventure Kings 4WD Awning!

September 26, 2018   |   By DIY INSTALLATION – Fitting your Adventure Kings 4WD Awning! - image Capture-16 on https://news.emgcloud.net/news

Not everyone is handy with the tools and if we were to be frankly honest, many of us are absolutely horrible behind the spanners, this poses somewhat of a problem for those wanting to get into DIY upgrades for their 4WD – unless you are looking at upgrading your 4WD with gear from Adventure Kings.

The Adventure Kings Awnings are not difficult to install like some of those Scandinavian flat pack furniture kits and in reality installation requires next to no assembly and can be done in less than an afternoon in the driveway on your own with nothing but a couple of simple hand tools .

We’re going to walk over the few steps it takes to easily upgrade your 4WD’s versatility when you hit the beach, campsites and even for lunch breaks on the tracks this spring season!

Step 1 Inspect package

The first step to installing your 4WD Awning is to open up the cardboard packaging  and make sure that you have everything you need.

The mounting kit includes all the hardware you need to install your new Awning, tucked away inside the awning fabric, you may need to unroll your awning to find these components.

you should check that the kit includes the ‘L shaped’ mounting brackets and corresponding clamping plates along with all of the nuts and bolts required to mount the brackets.

The package should also include 2x ground stakes as well as 2 guy ropes fitted with tensioners for roping out your Awning when it is set up.

Step 2 Mount your brackets to your roof rack.

If you haven’t got a roof rack mounted to your 4WD then it is probably a good idea to invest in either a set of cross bars like the Adventure Kings Track Mount Rack or one of the many Adventure Kings Steel Roof Rack Systems, not only are these affordable systems but they are extremely versatile for adding additional gear carrying capacity to your 4WD!

To mount your ‘L bracket’ simply line it up with your racks mesh or align the bracket and drill some corresponding holes all the way through your cross bar to give yourself a place to bolt the bracket to the roof of your vehicle.

With your rack prepared you can now set the bracket with the short side of the ‘L-Bracket’ facing downwards to reduce your vehicles overall height, passing the long bolts all the way through the bracket and your rack and using the clamping plates on the bottom along with the included nuts you can clamp the brackets loosely.

Step 3 Install short nuts into awning channels

With the brackets mounted to your vehicle, you can now pop the plastic end cap off the track on the back of your Adventure Kings Awning –  this will allow you to slide 3 of the shorter bolts into each of the tracks (6x bolts in total), and pop your end cap back into place.

Roughly line up your bolt pairs with the mounting brackets on your vehicles roof rack and remove the nylon locking nuts from each bolt.

Step 4 Mount your awning to the brackets

if you don’t have a helping hand, you can easily take advantage of a cam buckle strap, a ratchet strap, a fridge tie down strap, one or two of the included guy ropes, or even your belt if you are in a pinch to loosely hold the awning into place whilst you locate the bolts into their respective brackets.

Simply tighten up the nylon locking nuts, and move along to the next bracket until the awning is fastened roughly into place.

Step 5 Go over all of the fasteners once more!

you are probably really proud of your brand new Adventure Kings Awning and for that plus many other reasons, you will want to go around with your spanners and tighten up all of the fasteners, making sure your awning is locked in tight and not going to go anywhere when you start driving.

Step 6 ENJOY!

All the hard work is done, it’s now time to set your Brand new awning up and admire your hard work. The ripstop polyester doesn’t require any treatments or seasoning to be waterproof so you can head out onto the tracks and test it out!

HOW TO SET UP your new Awning

If you aren’t that handy you’ve done great getting this far and should be proud of your new awning.

We aren’t going to leave you here, we are going to touch over some of our expert tips for setting up your awning quickly and safely on the tracks the most straight forward way possible!

  1. Unzip and unroll

Unzip your awnings Tough PVC zip up cover, and release the securing Velcro straps, once the awning is free unroll it a couple of wraps and place the awning on the roof of your vehicle.

  1. Unfold the crossbars

With your awning conveniently up and out of the way on your rooftop, extend out your 2 side poles make sure you swing these out of the way to allow you to fully unroll your awning.

  1. Unroll your awning all of the way

With the vertical poles clear you can unroll your awning fabric all of the way and extend out one vertical leg at a time, twisting them to lock their internal locking mechanism to secure them into place, making sure one side is slightly lower to allow water run off.

  1. Insert the horizontal poles and Velcro up

With both legs extended you can insert the horizontal poles into their socket on the extruded frame piece. With the horizontal poles in place, extend them until the awning fabric is tense and not sagging and lock the horizontal poles into place with the same twist locking mechanism. You can now attach the Velcro loops along the edge to stop the fabric from flapping.

  1. Always secure your awning

The Awning includes a set of guy ropes for a reason. Even if it isn’t windy, securing your awning to the ground using the included cords, ensures that even unexpected gusts will not pick your awning up and potentially damage your vehicle.

  1. Kick back with a cold drink.

Now you are set up with your awning for shade and shelter, it’s time to enjoy a hard-earned drink, from your Adventure Kings 60L Fridge Freezer whilst kicking back in your favorite Adventure Kings Reclining Camp Chair, and enjoy the view!
