Decompressing Tyre Myths!

What if we told you, that you could increase traction reduce damage, improve handling and get a smoother ride with one simple tip. The best thing about this tip is that it costs you practically nothing and will set you up for nothing but improved performance from your bog standard 4WD vehicle.

All of these benefits are practically cost free, when you lower your pressures off-road using a Kwiky Tyre Deflator from 4WD Supacentre, it captures the valve core inside the device and saves you from getting dirt and grit inside your tyre valve stem.

This device screws onto your dust cap thread, and with the integrated valve core removal tool simply extracts the core completely encapsulated within the device, opening the largest possible bore for releasing as much air from your tyres as possible. With a fast-acting pressure release valve and an easy to read air pressure gauge you have ultimate control on your tyre pressures out on the tracks and are able to drop tyre pressure in just a few minutes to the perfect pressures.

What exactly is the perfect pressure for your setup? We have a magic trick to figure this out, which is perfect when you have recently upgraded to bigger doughnuts or have never experimented offroad.

4PSI RULE

Because just about every 4WD out there has differing tyre sizes, a pressure that works for you might not be the best for your mate. The 4PSI rule is a proven way to find the perfect tyre pressure for your tyres across any terrain, whether it be on dirt, sand, mud or tarmac.

Every manufacturer has a recommended air pressure for the factory tyres fitted, so if you set your pressures roughly where you think they should be for the terrain you are on, by using your Kwiky Tyre Deflator. Once set you can drive for long enough to get the tyres warm and up to operating temps.

once they are warm check the pressures again, and if they’ve gone up by more than 4psi, the starting pressure was far too low. If they’ve gone up by less than 4psi, then your pressures were too high and you should drop a couple of PSI out again and re-verify.

Once you nail the 4PSI rule it will help you nail down the correct tyre pressure for every terrain you like to drive. After all, incorrect tyre pressures are the biggest contributor to tyre failure and loss of traction off road.

Armed with the right tyre pressures you can nail the toughest tracks with confidence of supreme grip and tyre life, however if you mess this up and de seat your tyre off your bead, you are going to have to figure out how to get your tyre back up and rolling to get home.

RE-SEATING A BEAD

Most of the time when you roll a bead it’s a result of pushing the side wall up against an obstacle and effectively levering your tyre off the rim, this means cleaning up the debris is the first step, getting a clean sealing surface is critical.

Most of the time, dirt, mud or bark will be jammed up in the lip of the rim, so you’ll need to jack your 4WD up this will take the pressure off and allow you to clean out the gunk before you attempt to remount it.

If you’ve only rolled one bead, running a ratchet strap around the diameter of the tyre will help to seal the tyre firmly up against the rim. If you’ve rolled both beads off, you’ll probably be better off removing the wheel completely. Lay the tyre on its side and let gravity do half of the work in resealing the bead for you.

Once you’ve got the tyre resting on the lip of the rim, all that’s left is to pump it full of air as fast as possible preferably with a Thumper MAX and 3in1 tyre deflator combo, which gives absolute control over your pressure with the press of a trigger, by keeping your fingers well clear, and squeezing the thumb trigger, you’ll know the tyre is fully re-seated when you hear a loud pop and the tyre feels full!

There are many ways to head bush with your adventure Kings setup but the combo of a Kwiky Tyre Deflator, Thumper MAX double piston air compressor and 3 in 1 tyre deflator, is the best way to get your setup rocking and rolling this summer!
