Cutting edge solar, doesn’t have to take an arm or a leg!

January 10, 2021   |   By Cutting edge solar, doesn't have to take an arm or a leg! - image 201123-160W-Semi-Flexible-SolarAKSR-FL160W_02-4-of-7 on https://news.emgcloud.net/news

A cutting edge solar power setup doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg, the affordable Semi flexible solar panels from Adventure Kings gives you the power and flexibility you need to keep your system running, no matter where you pull up.

Solar technology has been touted as the way forward for the power needs of the whole world, with the ability to harness the suns powerful UV rays free of charge, providing a virtually unlimited resource with minimal maintenance required, with more and more investment into the technology, the availability to be fully off grid when camping something we have all desired for years, and now it is an affordable reality for anyone in Oz!

In recent years solar panel technology has jumped ahead in leaps and bounds, with the most recent update to the 12v solar market being  the brand new and extremely affordable semi-flexible solar panel styles, despite being new, this technology is still insanely affordable, and are designed to be mounted up directly to just about any hard surface, like your ute canopy, hard top roof top tents and even directly on the roof of caravans, camper trailers and boats for reliable 12v power without requiring heavy duty hardware to support it.

The latest technology has just been released within the well renown Adventure Kings Solar Panel range and is engineered to withstand saltwater environments and not degrade or corrode like similar units on the market along with being obviously left out in the sun indefinitely which should go without saying, but isnt always a marketable feature in a mounted 12v solar panel, this is due to its fully IP67 rated junction boxes and durable, flexible, ETFE body, which is a highly flexible and corrosion resistant polymer stacking up extremely well against the old polycarbonate aluminum frame designs of yesteryear.

This polymer body is “monolithic” which means the whole panel is one material, which  allows the semi flexible solar panel range to be bent around a total of 30° which is massive considering the older style of solar panels cannot flex AT ALL!

The flexibility of the panels is not its only saving grace, its monolithic design offers an incredibly low profile, as the ETFE is the entire structure of the panel, this means that unlike traditional style panels you don’t require an extruded aluminium frame to support the panel, this means the panel is mountable in many locations that simply would not work with the outdated hard panel designs. Additionally the profile that it presents to the wind is so minimal the aerodynamic drag is basically unoticable when looking at fuel economy figures between having panels and not having panels.

Whilst being flexible, the performance of the panels is nothing to be scoffed at when comparing apples and apples, the 160W hard Solar Panel and the 160W semi-Flexible panel In the Kings range both offer 160w of charging power, this is equivalent to 8.7 amps of charging power however the biggest difference between the two is the 60mm difference in width between the 160W folding panel, and the Semi flexible variety, making it not only far thinner in profile, able to be curved to fit many surfaces, it also requires less “real-estate” on your vehicle for the same power output, how about that!

So along with the low profile for reduced drag, in permanently mounted applications the equivalent outputs as well as the flexibility makes the 160W semi-flexible solar panels one of the best upgrade for a camping rig that you could choose.

Every solar panel outputs a variable output depending on the sunlight that is available, this is where a solar regulator comes in handy. The native output of a solar panel will typically be up around 20v usually this is far too high for a vehicles 12v battery setup, a solar regulators job is to reduce the voltage down to a much more manageable voltage for your setup which is more around 13.5v.
