When we get out camping, the desire to eat filling and tasty meals is one of the paramount concerns when getting organised! However, not everyone knows how to cook the basics, particularly over the campfire, so we are going to guide you on the best way to cook our favorite bush meal, with next to no fuss, and minimal ingredients anyone’s camping pantry should have in stock!

Cooking a restaurant quality steak!

Steak is one of the real measures of a persons ability to cook a meal anywhere, whether its at a family BBQ, on the tracks or on the stove top at home. The inability to cook a steak may even be seen as a weakness by your camping tribe.

So here are our top tips for cooking a good steak on the tracks or at home!

Firstly make sure you choose steaks that are cut evenly, this means that they are a uniform thickness the whole way across, beef steaks should be approximately 1” thick (20-25mm) for the best outcome, however not all steaks were created equal and sometimes supermarket steaks could let you down.

If you are cooking lamb cutlets they should be at least 15mm thick, to remain a little bit pink on the inside!

If you have steaks stored frozen in your deep freeze section of your Adventure Kings 65L Dual Zone Fridge Freezer, you should definitely, defrost them in the fridge section the day before you cook them this will mean they don’t go through dramatic and quick temperature changes which can make the meat taste funny, then about 10 mins before cooking you should pull them out and let them com all the way up to room temperature.

Dry the steaks with paper towel to ensure there is no excess moisture on them, and gently spray or coat them with a light olive oil, salt and pepper both sides of the steak for flavour and don’t hesitate to massage the seasoning into the meat for additional flavour.

When cooking steak it is important to oil the steak and not the BBQ, as this will ensure the maximum amount of flavour stays with the meat.

With dozens of ways to cook your meals on the tracks our favorite is over the top of an Adventure Kings BBQ Plate, they are easy to use and even easier to clean and pack away, the best way to cook your steak is to get the BBQ Hotplate sizzling hot, where a droplet of water would skate across it.

With a nice even heat, you must space your steaks far enough apart, the reason being if you over crowd your hot plate you’ll lose all of your heat.

The rule of thumb, for timing of cooking the perfect steaks is as follows;

 Rare: 1½ mins per side

Medium rare: 2 mins per side

Medium: About 2¼ mins per side

Well-done steak: Cook for about 4-5 mins each side, depending on thickness.

Armed with all of this knowledge you’ll be able to cook the perfect steak first time, everytime without fear of overcooking or “burning it” as the better half calls it, or even serving up tastless, funny tasting meals!

So get out there and start cooking up a storm!
