AVOIDING ANIMAL STRIKES – A Messy Mistake, that could take out your 4WD!

We can’t think of much worse than an animal strike in the bush, it can be a sad and traumatic event, particularly if you aren’t used to seeing an animal die, and in some cases may require you to humanely finish the job.

Whilst bull bars are sold to many with the belief that they are now immune to the potential damage an animal may cause if impacted at speed. Even a top quality bull bar cannot protect your under carriage, or windshield from the damage that an animal may cause.

When hitting the tracks there are a few marsupials that are common culprits when it comes to motor vehicle collisions, particularly Kangaroos/wallabies and wombats. They are two of the most famous Australian animals, however being semi nocturnal means they come out to graze at dusk and dawn, posing a few issues for humans who are typically diurnal. Not only do Kangaroos and Wombats blend into their surrounding environment in the darker hours of the day, they tend to react funny with road noise and can act unpredictably.

Reports of accidents can vary from hitting wombats which can weigh up to 35Kg and damaging suspension components, and even parts of the underbody of your 4WD. Whilst a Big Red Kangaroo can reach up to 90kg and are much faster movers reaching in excess of 70Km/h. Their speed and weight makes impact less predictable, and vehicle damage can be anywhere on the vehicle ranging from side panels to even hitting the windshield, and ending up on your lap.

So one of our biggest defenses to animal strikes is by putting out much more light than before to hopefully see the animal well before impact, and allow us to adjust our speed and increase caution when getting closer.

Whilst standard high beams usually fall between 3000K-4300K on the warmth scale, they are easy on the eyes, but don’t show all the detail of potential hazards found on the tracks. This is one of the many reasons fitting a set of LED Lights to the front of your vehicle. When you are considering LED Lights a set of Adventure Kings LED Driving Lights or the LED Light bars offer a much cooler temperature  resembling the midday sunlight, between 6000K-6500K. This cooler colour temperature  of light helps the human eye to distinguish shapes, in the shadowy times of day where vision can be obscured.

Not only do Adventure Kings aftermarket LED Lights offer plenty of clarity, they also extend your range of vision. When comparing a standard headlight high beams which usually will not reach out as far as 100m, by using the latest release Adventure Kings Domin8r 9” LED Driving Lights you easily see out past 800m with clear bright white light.

Whilst some manufacturers offer upgraded light globes, that use more power than standard globes, caution must be taken to ensure that you don’t overload your vehicles wiring, or overheat your headlight housing, not to mention with different style globes, you may find that your headlights require readjustment.

Choosing between LED Lightbars and LED Driving lights can be a difficult task as they offer similar yet different outputs, with the LED Driving lights offering a much more focused beam, the LED Lightbars tend to project much more light out sideways where surprise animal strikes may occur, with the new Domin8r LED Lightbar range, spreading an impressive 150° wide that is nearly perpendicular to the direction of travel.

So don’t risk it any more, make sure you equip your vehicle with enough light to tackle the night tracks, and long stretches of night time highway, and completely avoid traumatic animal strikes, and costly repair bills next time you head out on the open highway at dusk and dawn.
