A guide to Camper Trailers

Camper trailers, Caravans and motorhomes are great accessories for all your outdoor adventures. However, there are so many different types and styles to choose from that it’s hard to know which camper trailer, caravan or motorhome best suits your needs. In this article I will walk through the different types and styles of Camper trailers, caravans and motorhomes and list the pros and cons of each. That way you can use this article as an essential buyer’s guide.

First on the list are pop up camper trailers. These camper trailers are quite easy to set up, as the name suggest they simply pop up or even sometimes winch up. The best way to describe a pop up camper trailer is like a mini caravan. The benefits of a pop up camper trailer is that they are significantly lighter and smaller than a traditional Caravan. This allows you to reach camping spots a big caravan simply wouldn’t fit. This also allows you to have a smaller and cheaper vehicle as the load on the vehicle will be a lot less. The down fall of pop up camper trailers is storage. Due to their compact size plus the fact they are kitted out with cabinetry and other amenities the space for gear is sometimes quite small.

Caravans are a great way to camp in luxury. Essentially a caravan is a small home or unit on wheels. They often feature a full list of amenities you’d find in your own home. Such as a full sized fridge, microwave, a double bed, a full kitchen and even an ensuite featuring both a shower, toilet and sink. Caravans are great for long trips, as they are incredibly comfortable, and you always have somewhere to wash up. Another reason they are great for big adventures is the fact they feature plenty of room to store gear. With an excess amount of cabinets and room you certainly don’t have to be light on packing. This brings me to the draw back of caravans, although the large size is a major positive it is also a big negative. Caravans can limit the places and roads you’d like to travel due to their large size. If you’re truly chasing the road less travelled the sheer size of caravan might let you down. Not only is it the size but with size comes weight. With the large size plus the complete list of amenities and features inside caravans it makes them extremely heavy. This will also limit the four wheel drive tracks you can take. The size and weight will also put large amounts of strain on your vehicle, requiring you to have a vehicle large enough to handle the load. Therefore, this adds to the cost of your overall trip and setup. Another cost aspect is fuel economy, due to the size and weight the drag is increased and thus your fuel consumption will be considerably more.

If your truly want to camp in luxury a take things one step further a motorhome is the choice for you. Motorhomes are true five start luxury they are quite similar to caravans however everything is bigger and better. Like a caravan a motorhome is also jam packed with features like an ensuite featuring both a shower, toilet and sink, a full kitchen with a full sized fridge, microwave and built in tv. Depending on the size motorhomes often feature two double beds and then also a single bed, so space certainly isn’t an issue. The size of motorhomes drastically varies from big to absolutely enormous, some motorhomes are the size of a coach bus. Obviously the major benefit of a motorhome is luxury, if you want all the creature comforts from home and more then a motorhome is the way to go. Another benefit of a motorhome is although they are incredibly large, they don’t require a vehicle as a motorhome is a vehicle itself. This is a tough one to figure out with pricing because on the one hand it makes them more affordable but on the other hand, you’re paying for a second vehicle so it makes it more expensive. A large draw back of caravans is people find them hard to park and back into tight spaces. Although a motorhome is larger, they are strangely sometimes easier to drive then towing a large caravan. The negatives of a motorhome however are also due to its sheer size. The size of a motorhome drastically limits the number of places you can take it. Most motorhomes cannot go off road so you are restricted to only paved roads. Motorhomes are also extremely expensive.

The final option is an offroad camper trailer, these are truly designed with outdoor adventures in mind. Like a caravan or motorhome 4WD camper trailers feature creature comforts as well. Like a built in water tank, kitchen sink and even a fridge. However, unlike a pop up camper trailer an heavy duty camper trailer has amble amounts of storage. With the ability to feature a rooftop tent and offroad camper trailer can keep the main section of the trailer free for stacks of camping gear. Unlike a motorhome or caravan an 4WD camper trailer is small and nimble allowing it to reach those awesome camp spots at the end of the road less travelled. Another bonus is due to the lack of cabinetry an heavy duty camper trailer is lighter weight too. Thus, reducing the load on the vehicle and truly making it able to hit those tough 4WD tracks. The size of an offroad camper trailer also makes it easy to tow and reverse into tight spots.

In conclusion Camper trailers, Caravans and motorhomes are all great accessories for all your outdoor adventures. But if you’re truly looking for something that can do it all, then an offroad camper trailer is the way to go.
