Why It’s Time To Upgrade To A Set of New LED Driving Lights

July 1, 2021   |   By Why It's Time To Upgrade To A Set of New LED Driving Lights - image 210427-Lethal-Lights-at-Capertee-8-of-31 on https://news.emgcloud.net/news

Driving lights technology has come a seriously long way in the past decade. For those of us who’ve been around the traps for a few years, it’s not hard to remember the old style of driving lights we put up with for decades – halogen lights that sucked so much battery power that you could see your voltmeter drop when you hit the high beam stalk, light output that honestly wasn’t that much better than your regular high beam globes, and the price – that was probably the worst part! You’d pay $500 for something anywhere near close to a ‘decent’ set of 4×4 driving lights and even then they had flimsy mounts, brittle glass lenses that cracked at the first flick of a stone from a car in front of you, and were… well, pretty underwhelming to be honest.

Here at Adventure Kings we’ve been working hard to improve LED driving lights for a decade now. We’ve focused on three things – making 4×4 spotlights brighter, making them tougher and of course making them more affordable. We’re proud of the fact that our newest incarnation of LED spotties that we call Lethal are simply astonishing all round. They’re insanely bright – the 9” LED spotlights throw light out to 1.6km away from the car, feature our toughest and most indestructible housing and mounts ever, and they are RIDICULOUSLY affordable too.

If you’re still running an old set of 4WD spot lights then now’s the time to do yourself a favour and upgrade to a new set of Kings LED spotlights. The difference is literally night and day – chalk and cheese. I’m running a set of 8.5” laser spotlights on the front of my ute, and apart from the fact they look awesome – ultra modern and overall very flash – the biggest benefit is the simply astonishing amount of light that they throw down the road when you pull the high beam stalk. There’s nothing like nosing your rig out of a side road onto a long, deserted and pitch black country road or highway, getting up to cruising speed, hitting the cruise control and then flooding the road ahead of you with your LED driving lights. It’s the best feeling, being able to see what’s ahead of you, knowing where the turns and the curves in the road are well ahead of time instead of being surprised by them at the last minute, and most importantly being able to spot roos and other wildlife on the side or in the middle of the road well before you need to lock the brakes up in an emergency stop.

When I spend time in our Adventure Kings stores talking to 4WDers, campers and truckies, I often get asked for recommendations as to what modification people should make next. For anyone who loves putting kays on their odometer, or who drives for a living or simply lives out of town, the answer is always the same – a set of led driving lights. Nothing upgrades your vehicle like 4×4 spotties!

Our latest incarnation – the Lethal LED driving lights – are the culmination of that 10 years of research and development. We’ve beaten these lights to hell and back to ensure that they’re strong. I’ve done the ultimate torture test, which we filmed and posted on our Youtube channel (search for Lethal Driving Light Torture Test if you’re keen to see it). In that test I ran a set of 9” Lethal LED Driving Lights underwater for an hour to test their waterproof ability, threw one off a 100 foot cliff, towed the other behind a 4WD on a rocky dirty farm track for kilometres and then finally hit the lights with 90°C 1100psi hot water from a diesel hot water pressure washer. Yep, they certainly looked a bit worse for wear after all that – especially the cliff dive and the tow test! – but most importantly they turned on when I hooked them up to power, and those exact lights are still working to this very day. In my books that’s as tough a test as you’d ever see or expect a set of 4WD spotlights to go through, and to my mind that’s definitive proof that these incredible LED spotties will stand up to just about anything you can throw at them.

A word of advice though. If you’re upgrading your old tired driving lights to a new set, do yourself a favour and shout yourself one of the awesome Kings Plug n Play Smart Wiring Harnesses. These do two things, and are an excellent idea even if you already had power going to your old spotlights. The biggest thing they do is take the question mark out of your wiring – those questions of ‘is it good enough’, ‘will it get enough power to my night LED driving lights’, and ‘will the wiring last the distance’. These harnesses are built to work perfectly with these lights, and that’s what they’ll do – work and work and work. You’ll never need to question whether your LED spotties are working properly, or why one of them is dropping out over rough roads. The second thing the harness does is makes your driving light installation so simple. No cutting, no soldering, no prodding around with a test light or a multimeter to figure out which wire goes where – it’s all ultra simple when you use the Kings Plug n Play Smart Harness.

Do yourself a favour and put a set of the new Kings Lethal LED Driving Lights on your must-get list. They’ll transform your rig, and you’ll find yourself looking forward to that next long night drive as much as I do.
