Why A Flat Roofrack is The Ultimate Roofrack For All Uses

April 25, 2021   |   By Why A Flat Roofrack is The Ultimate Roofrack For All Uses - image 210310-Misc-Lifestyle-Insta-Pics-2 on https://news.emgcloud.net/news

Here at Adventure Kings we sell many different styles of roofracks. Our steel roofracks come in four different styles – a flat roofrack, a rooftop tent rack, a tradie roofrack and a full cage roofrack. Our new range of aluminium platform roofracks are available for many different models of vehicles but all feature the same low-profile flat design. We’re massive fans of flat roofracks and think in fact that they may be the ultimate roofrack for just about any use! Let’s look at what makes a flat roofrack so good. And remember – you can get your roofrack from Adventure Kings as a DIY roofrack kit meaning you can install it yourself – so there’s no reason not to add serious storage capabilities to your vehicle!

  1. FLAT ROOFRACKS MINIMISE OVERALL VEHICLE HEIGHT

Typically when you fit a roofrack you can say goodbye to being able to park in your garage, or in the underground carpark at the shops! However when you fit a flat roofrack you minimise the overall vehicle height, and in many cases you’ll still happily be able to park under cover wherever you need to. A perfect case in point is the Ford Ranger we have here at Adventure Kings. It has a 2inch lift and a set of 33inch mud tyres, as well as a Kings platform roofrack. In other words, it’s a big decked out 4WD – but the overall vehicle height is still low enough to fit under 1.9m car parks! Of course your vehicle’s height will vary depending on what size lift and tyres you’re running, but adding a flat roofrack in most cases only raises the overall vehicle roof height by about 100mm. That’s a small price to pay for the convenience of having a huge roofrack that you can store just about anything on!

  1. MYTH: YOU CAN’T TIE THINGS DOWN ONTO A FLAT ROOFRACK. TRUTH: YOU CAN!

A common question we get asked here at Adventure Kings is whether you can still strap things down to a flat roofrack. It’s understandable, because if you compare one to a full cage roofrack it looks like there are less places to hook a ratchet strap or some rope onto! However there’s nothing stopping you from hooking onto the main support bars on a flat 4×4 roofrack which will give you huge amounts of strength. Whether you’re a tradie needing to strap jobsite materials down, or you’re a camper and want to strap down your double swag or camping gazebo, you’ll have no drama doing it with a flat roofrack. And because you’re pulling it down into the roofrack, you’re securing it properly and not risking it moving while you’re travelling.

  1. FLAT ROOFRACKS MAKE FOR EASIER LOADING AND UNLOADING OF GEAR

Here’s something we absolutely love about flat 4WD roofracks – they’re so easy to load! Not having to lift something heavy and awkward like a gas bottle or a jerry can those extra 8 inches over the top of a full cage 4WD roofrack, makes a huge difference. And when you get to camp, it’s as easy as undoing your ratchet straps and then rolling your double swag off the side of the roofrackand you’re unloaded! It may not seem like much but this is a huge benefit that you’ll realise when you start using your 4WD roofrack and it’s definitely one of our favourite things about a steel flat rack.

  1. FLAT ROOFRACKS SUIT ALL STYLES OF KINGS ROOFTOP TENTS

It’s true that we sell a rooftop tent roofrack here at 4WD Supacentre, which is in actuality a full cage roofrack that has had the rear three quarters of the upper rail removed. This lets you mount a Tourer Rooftop Tent on top of your roofrack easily, as the rooftop tent is in fact a little wider than the upper rail section. However it means that you can’t fit a full-length rooftop tent like a Kwiky rooftop tent or a Grand Tourer MkII aluminium rooftop tent. For that purpose you’ll definitely need a flat roofrack to allow you to flush-mount your rooftop tent along the full length of the roofrack. Both the Kings steel flat roofrack and the Kings alloy platform rack are perfect for this, and are the ideal combo product to bundle with your new Kings rooftop tent – especially when you remember that the whole thing is an easy DIY installation that you can do at home in your driveway only using the most basic of hand tools!

  1. FLAT ROOFRACKS MINIMISE WIND DRAG AND MINIMISE FUEL USAGE

Fuel ain’t getting any cheaper, and as 4WDers we’re already up against the odds since we drive massive brick-shaped vehicles that typically have terrible aerodynamics. Traditionally, adding a roofrack means taking away from aerodynamics even further, increasing wind drag and in turn increasing the fuel you use at any given speed. Because as we mentioned earlier a flat roofrack typically only adds around 100mm of height to a vehicle, the negative effect on wind drag and fuel usage is substantially reduced – to the point where many 4WDers and campers report next to no difference in fuel usage between having the roofrack  on and having it off. Pretty hard to argue with that!

Of course you may require a different style of roofrack, but at the end of the day we’re huge fans of steel flat racks and alloy platform racks for all the reasons we mentioned above. We’re certain that you will love yours too. Especially when you grab it from Adventure Kings, and you’re guaranteed of getting an amazing quality product at a price you just can’t beat anywhere. And that leaves more money in your pocket to get out and travel!
