How to choose the perfect off road Driving lights

March 9, 2021   |   By Cahn Turner The right combination of driving lights makes off-road driving so easy!

Years ago, there wasn’t much choice if you wanted to fit a pair of driving lights on your vehicle. However, that’s not the case anymore with a huge range of high quality and affordable spot lights on the market with something to suit every vehicle, every budget and everyone’s preference. Whether you’re after an LED lightbar to maximise the amount of light you’re getting off to each side,  to make avoiding animals or navigating tight low range tracks easierm, or you need a pair of Laser Driving Lights for the ultimate in long-distance vision for those remote trips you’ll find what you’re looking for at 4WD Supacentre. LED lights have change the game for many reasons – they’re highly efficient in the sense that they put out a lot of light for the amount of power they use, because the lights don’t rely on a single powerful bulb and large reflectors there’s a much larger variation in shapes and size and finally they’re more rugged, with no filament that can rattle around and potentially break.

The first consideration is which size and shape will suit your vehicle. 9” driving lights will throw more light than 7” LED lights, but obviously they’re in a larger housing which means that you’ll need more space on your bullbar and you need to consider airflow to your radiator. Don’t think just because they’re a little smaller a pair of 7” Spot lights aren’t up to the task though! The Adventure Kings 7” Domin8r Xtreme Driving lights are capable of 1 lux at a huge 1111 metres and output over 13,000 lumens as a pair. Of course opting for a set of 7” laser driving lights will increase the spot light distance to 1 lux at 1618 metres… as you can see even a set of 7” LED lights will throw a huge amount of light. One of the main reasons Adventure Kings Driving lights are able to perform so well is that they are fitted with OSRAM LEDs. OSRAM is at the forefront of LED technology so by being fitted with genuine OSRAM LEDs, Adventure Kings Driving Lights are at the forefront too.

Another huge advantage of using LED lights is that you can engineer many different sizes and shapes compared to the old spot light technology. A perfect example is an LED Light Bar – by positioning the LEDs alongside each other you can create lights that offer a huge amount of spread and distance of light, in a housing that is much more slim line. Again, you need to decide what’s right for your vehicle – do you need the slim and compact housing that a single row lightbar offers? Or do you want the maximum light output that spreads to each side from a Domin8r lightbar? Finally, for the ultimate in spot and spread you can choose a Laser Lightbar. Many 4WDers love that a slimline lightbar can be mounted just about anywhere without standing out and in fact, slim light bars tend to enhance the look of a vehicle thanks to how sleek and modern they are. There are even numberplate lightbars, which make fitting easy on almost any vehicle and add heaps of light. Plus, there are smaller lightbars that are ideal for everything from forward facing spot lights, through to camp lighting or even rock lights. The 3” worklights are a great choice as reverse lights too, as they offer plenty of spread and spot light!

The next thing to look at when choosing an LED Lightbar, or a set of LED Driving lights is how tough they are. LED lights are already super robust thanks to not needing a brittle light bulb, but there are plenty of other key features to look for. Number one is to ensure they have a tough housing and mounting system and you can rest assured Adventure Kings LED lights have those! It’s also a good idea to look at the IP rating, which is a two number system that tells you how water proof and dust proof the driving lights are. Look for a minimum of IP67, which means the Driving lights are fully dust proof (that’s the ‘6’) and waterproof up to 1 metre of water for up to 30 mins (that’s the ‘7’). Adventure Kings Laser Driving Lights offer a huge IP67 rating so you know you can rely on them. The IP67 rating also applies to Laser Light Bars as well as the Numberplate LED light bar. Next is IP68 which takes the rating even further – offering full dustproofing and water proofing over 1m in depth for more than 30 minutes. The range leading Domin8r Xtreme driving lights are IP68 rated to ensure they’re protected against just about anything you can put them through.

Finally you need to think about the kind of driving you do (or you’re likely to do). If you’re a fan of low range, tough tracks then an LED light bar or a pair of LED Driving lights with a high lumen output are what you want. Or, for the best setup you can combine both – it’s easy these days when you can get an entire LED light pack in the one box, ready to install! If you’re doing more remote driving or touring long distances then you’ll want both high lumens and a good lux output. This is where Spot lights like the 9” Domin8r Xtreme or the 8.5” Laser Driving Lights come into their own. With the massive amount of light they can throw at a long distance, you’ll be able to see hazards well before they’re an issue. Again though, a laser driving light and laser lightbar combo will offer you the best of both worlds with an absolutely insane amount of light!
