We reckon that using your cooking gear for camping is one of the most enjoyable and relaxing things you can do at camp, and if you’ve spent a bit of time and money putting together a good pool of camp cooking gear, then you’re going to want to keep it in good condition so your camping cooking gear is ready to go whenever you need it to be!

Here’s a guide to looking after your camping & cooking gear to ensure that you get the maximum life out of it.

1. DON’T EVER SCRUB YOUR CAMP COOKING GEAR TOO HARD!

Ask any professional cook or chef, and they’ll tell you – you only ever want to rinse off your cooking gear in between uses! The more you scrub your camp cooking gear, the less of a protective layer of oil and grease is left on it. That means things like cast iron pots and camp ovens will start to rust. Instead, simply wipe down your camp cooking gear so there is no obvious food residue, pat it dry and store it for next time. This method will dramatically prolong the life of your cooking gear and ensure that it serves you faithfully for years to come!

2. BURNT BITS ON YOUR CAMPING COOKING GEAR? BURN THEM OFF!

After a big BBQ, particularly if you’ve used sticky sauces and marinades, it’s common to be left with a lot of burnt charcoal bits on your cooking gear. Resist the temptation to take it with a steel egg-lift or the like, as this will scratch and damage your cooking gear and even potentially lead to rust! The best option is to simply cook it off until it goes to a dry charcoal, at which stage you should be able to brush off your cooking gear. This prevents un-necessary damage to your portable BBQ for camping or your campfire BBQ hotplate, once again ensuring it will be good to use again next time.

3. RE-SEASONING YOUR CAMPING & COOKING GEAR

If your camping & cooking gear is new, or you’ve washed it with dish washing detergent, the best thing you can do before you put it away is to re-season it. This adds a protective layer of oil to your cooking gear, ensuring that rust doesn’t form in between camping trips. To season your campfire cooking gear, get it nice and hot over an open fire or on your portable gas bbq for camping, and then give it a good drenching in cooking oil. When the oil is nice and hot, a healthy amount of salt over the top can then be rubbed into your camping cooking gear with some paper towel, before you let your Voyager portable BBQ or similar gas bbq for camping cool down. Finally, give it a wipe off with some paper towel and it’s seasoned!
