Easier than you think: D.I.Y. LED Driving Light Install!

March 30, 2019   |   By Easier than you think: D.I.Y. LED Driving Light Install! - image 22769912_10159850375110001_5660946357110064918_o on https://news.emgcloud.net/news

Installing a new set of LED Spotties on the front of your 4WD may seem like a daunting task better reserved for a qualified auto electrician, but with the right kit and a little bit of patience you can install your own spotties in just an afternoon.

Most people overestimate the difficulty with installing a plug and play LED Driving light harness, but if you can turn a spanner and tighten a cable tie you have all the skill you need to get your 4WD shining bright when the sun has set!

To start you can unpack your wiring harness and remove the packaging wire twists, we always find it helpful to lay the wiring out to identify its components as follows;

  • Power leads (red and black)
  • Fuse block
  • Relay (12v or 24v)
  • Switch
  • Headlight adapters (H4 or HB3)
  • Waterproof Deutsch connector
  • Waterproof Deutsch splitter (for driving lights)

With everything figured out installation is almost self-explanatory, starting with your headlight adaptor, this is the most critical part of the harness with the ability to simply piggyback your vehicles existing wiring and the ability for your high beam to essentially “trigger” your new LED Driving lights to switch on automatically.

Whilst our kits come with 2 separate adapters the HB3 and H4 adapters don’t suit every vehicle and it may be necessary for you to grab a headlight adapter for your specific headlights!

With your headlights plugged up to the included adaptor, your wiring harness is ready to be “dry fit around your engine bay, ready to test and finalize the installation. By laying your wiring around your engine bay routing wires away from moving parts and clear of hot components like exhausts you can begin to look for a place to run your switch wiring through the firewall and a location to fasten your relay along with your battery’s location under the bonnet.

With your wiring dry fit figured out you can now start connecting your harness up to your battery (remove the blade fuse first) and connect the adapter plug to your headlight adapter, and ensure you have the right relay for your vehicle installed (most vehicles use 12v) with this all figured out and your waterproof deutsch connector fastened to your LED Driving light you can check the functionality of your setup, simply reinsert your blade fuse turn your headlights on from in the cabin and hit the high beams.

If everything went according to plan your brand new driving lights should be shining like the sun – PERFECT!

With the practice one out of the way you can begin to remove the blade terminals off the switch, taking note of which wire goes to which terminal, you can always take a picture with your smart phone to help you to remember and to make sure you can put everything back together the right way!

Feed the wiring for the switch to the back of your dash board, reassemble the switch and find a convenient location to place your switch by possibly removing a pop out switch panel.

You can now move back to underneath the bonnet, you will need a couple of cable ties, a socket or two and a handful or ring spanners – We need to fasten down our relay to prevent it from rattling loose and keeping the metal pins facing down, this will allow any water to drain out in the case of creek crossings.

Finally you need to ensure the battery terminal is tight on both the battery and the connections to the light wiring harness. With everything secured, zip tie the wiring into place making sure it is out of the way and following other wiring around the engine bay. You don’t have to squash the wiring just fasten it into place to stop it rubbing or chafing as the vehicle vibrates.

Lastly ensure all of your connections are secure and you are ready to roll!
