When packing all the camping gear up for your long weekend escapes, you probably got to a point where you couldn’t fit the puzzle pieces in, resulting in having to leave some of your creature comforts at home, when you’d much rather bring them onto the tracks.

If  this sounds familiar, you definitely need to look into fitting a set of roof racks to the top of your families vehicle.

Back in the good old days a roof rack was a roof rack, and generally a pretty universal affair. With most vehicles coming from factory with a rain channel that ran the perimeter of the vehicle, this was the ideal option for mounting a set of roof racks to your vehicle.


Initially these rain gutters were designed to prevent water from running down your vehicle’s windows allowing clear vision when driving around town and also preventing rain from entering your vehicle when you open and close your doors. This day and age, most manufacturers are hesitant to fit their vehicles with rain gutters as proprietary style roof racks have gradually become the norm. these proprietary style of roof racks often require specialist mounts, and expensive fitment by qualified technicians.

The kit comes with just about everything you need to install your roof rack, including the locking track, mounting hardware and even 2x aerodynamic cross bars which are perfect for fastening an Adventure Kings Vehicle Mounted Awning and even for adding a Steel ¾ Roof Rack or even a Steel Tradies Rack.


To fit your roof racks is quite simple, the first step being to cut and remove a section of the rubber roof channels, as per the included instructions, next alight your included roof channel sections with the pre-drilled & threaded holes on the roof of the vehicle and fasten into place as a template for drilling out the subsequent fastener holes along the roof rack channel.

With the track in place you can use a drill and the included drill bit to spot drill and correctly mark each fastener location along the track. you can now unscrew the tracks and drill out each hole, note that the roof metal is around 2-3mm thick so using a drill stop will help prevent drilling too deep and damaging your inner roof lining. Vacuum all of the metal flakes out of the channel, mask all of the drill holes and give a quick spray with cold gal to prevent corrosion.

When the cold gal is dry you can apply butyl-mastic to all of your drilled holes and the threaded holes at either end, and orient and position the track into place, with the correct fasteners and bolts you can now begin fastening the track to the roof of your 4WD!

NB: do not overtighten bolts yet, snug them down to allow a little bit of movement to allow easier alignment of the included rivets with your pre-drilled holes.

Once all of the rivets are fastened you can tighten the bolts at either end.

Now it is simply a matter of fitting the roof rack feet to the cross bars and mounting them to the tracks, when choosing an ideal mounting spacing you should mount the crossbars approximately 750mm apart.
