5 Tips for capturing crisp outdoor memories!

We all love hitting the tracks, and nothing is more satisfying than being able to take home some epic photo’s from our trips away in the bush!

We have a handful of extremely skilled photographers on our team who are keen to share some of their tips and tricks to getting the best pictures of your 4WDing trips away!

1 – Shoot in the highest resolution possible!
The first rule to getting great shots on the tracks is to try and make sure you use the highest quality of image your camera is capable of capturing.

Depending on your camera’s ability, you may have the option to increase the quality all the way to full HD 1080p like with the Adventure Kings 1080p Action Camera or even RAW as with higher end DSLR cameras, this setting will allow you to have much greater control over the video or pictures when you are looking at and editing them on the computer later!

2 – Shoot in the Golden Hour!

You can shoot hours of footage and thousands of photographs in your travels, however during the middle of the day, you will encounter a brighter whiter tone of light, whilst our eyes are attuned to this frequency and our footage and pictures can seem washed out and ‘over exposed’.

The common opinion amongst both scientists and photographers/videographers, is that the golden hour is the best time of day to take photographs. If you aren’t already sure of when the golden hour is, it is the period of daytime shortly after sunrise or before sunset, where daylight has a more red hues and tones are less harsh than the light when the sun is higher in the sky.

The golden hour give greater shadows and more, not only do sunset shots bring out the best in photo’s they are extremely easy to get pictures that look good!

3 – Bring warm clothing!

When waiting to get the best photo’s before sunrise or after you’ve got your golden snaps, it can get pretty cold. Without the warmth of the sun, particularly if you are just sitting around in your favorite Adventure Kings Throne Camp Chair, the chill when the darkness sets in can frost you to the core.

By wearing your warm clothes, you can stay toasty warm even when there is no sun to warm you up, one of our favorite things to do is stoke the fire in our Adventure Kings Camp Oven/Stove early, this way we don’t spoil the natural light and we can still stay toasty warm whilst all the smoke is lifted up and away!

4 – Milky way photos

This one is hard without a DSLR, if you have the option try shooting with the widest and fastest lens possible (fast means biggest aperture, if you aren’t sure check your user’s manual), fasten your camera onto a stable tripod. Keep your shutter speed at or below 30 seconds, and don’t forget to frame in something interesting like your campsite in the foreground.

A great campsite milky way shot will make all your buddies envious of your trip away and will tempt them to come along next time you are offering to drag them into the middle of nowhere!

5 – Take in the whole picture

Don’t forget that your money shot is important, but documenting the journey will tell a much better story than just one pic, we love making sure we take photo’s of things that may seem a bit mundane on our trip, such as our dirty boots, washing off the windscreen after a big mud puddle, the standard creative cooking shots and even photos of gnarly tracks, and fuel station stops, when you are on the trip you will miss so many fine details.

With a clear high-res documentation you’ll be able to easily recall all of your trip and be able to share special moments with all your buddies (try not to spam their Facebook walls though!).

You also never know, some of the most unexpected shots become our favorites when we get home!

So next time you are hitting the tracks, don’t be shy, pull out your favorite camera and take a stack of pictures, both for your memories, and to share with your friends and families!
