Do you have enough juice for your camping setup?

You can easily calculate whether your time at camp is going to be cut short or not, we’ll show you how easily you can do it.

Firstly, you need to calculate your complete power usage, when considering your total power consumption, you have to consider the total sum of all of your camping accessories – this includes everything from phone chargers to your 12v fridge freezer system and campsite lighting.

The table below gives a bit of an idea of just how much your total power usage could be with a very basic camping setup, your results may vary and calculating your complete setup is a good idea for yourself.

Accessory Minimum Amps Maximum Amps Avg A/H Time used Total Usage
12v Fridge/Freezers (60L) 0.5A 4.5A 0.85Ah 24 hrs 20.4 Ah
Camp Lighting 0.4A 2.75A 1 Ah 6 hrs 16.5 Ah
Phone chargers 0.5A 2.1A 6.3 Ah 3 hrs 18.9 Ah
UHF Radio 1.6 A 0.5 AH >24 hrs 12.0 Ah
TOTAL 67.8 Ah

With a good idea what your campsite will need to keep running you now need to look at your batteries complete battery amperage and consider how much reserve power is required to start your car, typically in the range of around 500 amps for a brief period!

When a typical 4WD battery ranges between 100 Ah of capacity, subtract your simple campsite power needs of 67.85 Ah leaving only 32.15 Ah in reserve, with approximately 36 hours of battery life you are left with no way to start your 4WD.  This is why YOU need to have a backup power supply like an Adventure Kings Generator, or a reliable 12v solar charging system.

With a portable campsite solar power system, with the regulated charging capability being up to 13.74A with at least around 9 hours of daylight in Australia you can charge up to around 123.66 Amps which is HUGE amount of power, if you didn’t need that kind of excess, you could easily get away with an Adventure Kings 120W Portable Solar Blanket with 7.35A of charge over 9 hours with a total of 66.15 Amps of charging capability, with just 1 amp of charge depletion in your battery you can stay indefinitely at your favorite campsite, keeping all your electrical goods running smoothly completely silently and virtually cost free!

The benefits to using a 120W Portable Solar Blanket is the ability to fold the whole thing down into a tiny package you can hide under your driver’s seat, that is capable of powering your entire campsite without making a sound, simply plug it in, point it at the sun and let the whole system charge!

You can equip your entire campsite with all the essential 12v power without needing to run your motor to keep the alternator cranking to recharge your 12v system, by bringing your own off grid power supply you’ll be cheering no matter when you are camping!

All solar systems, take advantage of the included PWM solar regulator, which cleverly drops the voltage from the unregulated voltage of 22.3V down to a safe 14v, whilst constantly monitoring your batteries health to prevent overcharging.

Misconceptions

Whilst, the name solar panel may give the impression that you need a bright sunny day for them to work effectively however the critical factor is the UV exposure in the area, and in reality a solar panel on an overcast day will receive more diffused light, than perhaps an incorrectly placed solar panel on a bright clear summer day.

The UV factor on the day will be one of the most critical factors as a solar panel is a solar energy harvester and UV radiation is a measure of the suns energy! So running a solar panel at camp is definitely beneficial for just about any setup and can let you run your setup off grid for much longer than you’ve ever been able to before.

One of the biggest benefits to running a solar panel, is its ability to simply set and forget for a steady stream of power topping up your whole system.
