4WD Tips and Tricks

Here are our top 5 tips to having fun offroad!

When heading out 4WDing you will generally be heading home with a huge smile on your face, with lots of laughter with your mates and stories to tell, if you take on board some of our awesome pro tips you will be able to have a much more enjoyable experience without as much damage!

Being aware of your 4WD’s capability, ground clearance, suspension type, traction, horsepower, weight and fuel capacity is critical to a successful trip offroad.

1.EXPERIENCE!

If you know your vehicle like the back of your hand, you’ll be able to understand what way to address the obstacles on the track ahead with a tactical mind. You’ll find the best way to get out of sticky situations when you are off the road.

Racking up the miles, means you’ll learn how your 4WD reacts to large undulations, slippery situations and even steep hills.

2.ARTICULATION!

If you aren’t a hardcore 4WDer you probably aren’t aware of “Articulation” sometimes called “flex”. To put it simply, flex or articulation is the ability for your wheels to travel up and down independently on both sides!

It may come as a big surprise but many 4WD’s have pretty good suspension from factory, with factory engineers able to put together suspension that is not only firm on road but plush off the beaten track!

A simple upgrade to not only improve your ride quality, articulation and even your onroad handling is a simple 50mm lift kit like the RAW Suspension Kit, lets you improve your 4WDs overall performance whilst also giving you an enhanced clearance, entry, breakover and departure angles, whilst also making it look cooler when comparing it with your mates 4WD’s.

3.DROP YOUR PRESSURES!

We’ve said it once, we’ll say it again – Dropping your tyre pressures by approximately half your highway pressures you can gain enhanced grip by allowing up to 200% more surface area to contact the track.

Not only do your tyres gain extra traction, but with the enhanced surface area you get much better ‘float’ over soft surfaces effectively reducing the downwards force put out by your tyres and effectively giving more buoyancy, use a Kwiky Tyre Deflator for one of the quickest deflation times around.

4.MAKE SURE YOUR 4WD IS UP TO SCRATCH!

When you are looking at all the cool ‘go-fast bits’ you can bolt onto your 4WD, you need to make sure your 4WD is running in tip top shape first.

First things first, take a flashlight and do a thorough once over, you are looking for leaks and loose bolts!

Make sure you plug in an Engine Data Scan to your vehicles diagnostic OBDII port. It gives real time readouts on your vehicle’s stats, plus it’ll give you a heads up when things don’t quite go to plan!

5.ALWAYS BRING YOUR MATES

When you hit the tracks there is no excuse for leaving your mates out of the fun – we love the banter, and as an added benefit of bringing your buddies is getting them to pull you out of trouble when trouble hits!

You can also get pull your buddies free in exchange for beers at the pub later – but no rescue should be attempted if you don’t have a quality rated Recovery Kit, the Hercules Essential Recovery Kit includes a snatch strap, shackles, extension straps and a tree trunk protector.

There is no reason to not have a rated recovery kit, its plain dangerous.

Get out and have fun, there is a bucket of good times to be had whilst getting off the road and enjoying the great outdoors!
