Winch shopping- we arent pulling your leg!

There isn’t a winch in Australia that gets put through more punishment than the ones on the front of the boys from the 4WD Action DVD’s Trucks!

The Adventure Kings range of winches includes the Grande MK III and the Domin8rX, both winches offer similar features across the board.

Both the Grande MKIII and the Domin8rX offer 12,000lbs of pulling force. The pull is championed in the Domin8r X by the 7.2HP motor and in the Grande a meaty 7hp weapon. Both these powerhouses drive the same 218:1 reduction gearbox with a drum brake that automatically engages when the winch is spooling!

The heavy duty Domin8r X winch gives all of its pulling power through a 9.5mm thick synthetic winch cable, whilst the Grande MKIII sports a lighter but still strong 9mm cable!

The biggest difference between the two of these heavy hitting , insane value winches is in the control boxes.

The Grande MKIII offers a standard wired in control cable, whilst also offering a wireless receiver which plugs into the winch control box and receives control signal through the compact wireless remote control!

The Domin8r X winch also offers wireless, whilst using a markedly different control method, connect the same wireless dongle to the winch control box, and then simply disconnect the control cable from your winch control handle, and press the wireless switch and you are in action!

No more getting tangeled in wires when trying to save your 4WD from deep mud!

The Domin8r X 12,000lb winch is the latest in the range of winches from 4WD Supacentre and offers an incredible 1 year warranty.

Both winches include a full fitment kit, which allows 4WDers to simply locate the winch body, connect the wiring according to the colour coding, wire to the battery and winch away!

The kit also includes a standard hawse (non-roller style) fairlead, clevis hook, and a rope protector sheath, with the length of synthetic winch cable being pre spooled onto the winch for an easier installation.

Whilst being 2 of the most affordable winches on the market, the 4WD Supacentre range has earned its reputation as 2 of the most effective, and trouble free winches on the market.

Here are a few handy tips for using a winch!

1.Don’t unspool all your winch cable.

When releasing the winch clutch and unspooling your cable, setup your anchor first and if possible use a winch extension strap from your Hercules Complete Recovery Kit. this means you have less work to do when packing up. Plus the less cable you winch out, the less you have to clean when you get home!

2.SAFETY FIRST

When perfoming any winch recovery, make sure you include a recovery dampener to cover any metal compenents like the clevis hook, or any shackles you might be using, this means in case of critical failure your metal gear doesn’t end up becoming a recovery projectile. Most recovery kits include a recovery dampener, and they take 2 seconds to install, so just use one… OK!

3.Double lines for double the pull!

You can take advantage of a snatch block, to double the pulling force put out by the winch, whilst a double line pull lets you have a massive mechanical advantage, it also halves the speed of winching, this mean that you have even more control when things get hairy on the tracks!

4.Keep your motor running

When operating a winch, you are going to use A LOT of energy… we mean a LOOOT of energy, for this reason you should always if possible, keep your motor running, and increase the idle to maintain a healthy charge going to your battery.

This is one of the most important steps, because nothing would be worse than saving your pride and joy to not be able to start it back up when it gets to the other side!

Follow these tips and you’ll have plenty of fun saving you and your mates on the tracks, and never forget the golden rule of 4WDing, 1 beer for 1 recovery, if you stick by these rules, you could even drink for free the whole trip!
