There’s no camping like snow camping!

February 25, 2018   |   By There's no camping like snow camping! - image Untitled-1 on https://news.emgcloud.net/news

With the winter olympics on television recently and most of summer behind us, there are plenty of people that are getting amped up for the coming snow season. With limited accomodation in towns like Jindabyne, and with the handful of places being free costing you an arm and a leg, you end up with not much change left for paying for your lift passes!

Because of the massive inflation of cost required to access australian ski resorts plenty of  fair dinkum aussie punters are left with little to no option but to find an unoccupied piece of grass and set-up camp!

But there are plenty of things that we see people doing wrong when setting up their winter campsites that can be easily avoided, resulting in a toasty warm nights sleep and a better day on the slopes!

To survive winter camping your first step is to eat better!

When cold and shivering an adult can burn up to 100 calories in just 15 minutes, considering the standard calorie intake for a male is around 2500 calories a day to maintain weight it would take just 6 hours of being cold to use up your whole day of calorie intake, not even considering the amount of energy burned whilst skiing or snowboarding.

So the first step to surviving your snow camping adventure  is eating all of those yummy foods, a good woodfire barbeque is just the ticket, being able to take advantage of the warmth of the fire which will assist in drying out all of your wet snow gear you can also setup an Adventure Kings BBQ hotplate for easy sausage sizzles, bacon and eggs, and hash browns no matter where you are camped!

The best thing about this hotplate is the clean up, simply scrape it into the fire and slip it away in the included canvas carry bag and you are good to go!

Some locations and at certain times of the season, you can be heavily restricted with the way that you start your campfire, this is where a handy enclosed unit like the Adventure Kings Camp Oven/stove can come in handy, compact and easily transportable this handy pot belly style stove means all of the hot ash and embers are reasonably well contained, with the extended 2410mm high chimney you can also direct smoke up and away from your campsite, meaning no more sore throats and stinging eyes.

The next step to staying alive is keeping your body insulated and up off the ground, even when you are not camped above the snow line, the ground in the high country gets a deep chill that will easily pull the heat out of your body.

So staying insulated and up off the ground isn’t as easy as using just sleeping bag where the insulation can become squashed underneath you or by blowing up a lilo where the air inside uses convection currents to slowly sap away all of your body heat.

The more insulation you have between you and the ground the better so adding a quality Adventure Kings Self Inflating Mattress to your Adventure Kings premium -5c sleeping bags is just the ticket, with a 100mm thick foam core and soft flocked top you have plenty of warmth even with an overnight snow flurry.

Plus the Queen sized self inflating mattress by Adventure Kings offers the perfect fit inside an Adventure Kings Big Daddy Swag, meaning you will be toasty warm and dry all night long inside one of Australia’s favorite swags not to mention cushioned from all the rocks underneath your set up!

Last but not least is a good quality shelter to sit underneath. The weather in the mountains is hardly predictable, and can go from 25 degrees and sunny to minus 10 in the space of an hour.

With fast moving storms it is a good idea to add additional campsite protection for when the unpredictable happens.

A solid Adventure Kings Awning, offers so much additional space to sit sheltered from the elements it isn’t funny.

Built out of tough 170GSM ripstop poly cotton it can take a serious beating and with the hard anodized aluminium frame is ideal for propping up the sturdy layer of protection over the top of your swag (and your freeloading mates too) in the event of heavy rainfall or a wild snow flurry through the night.

With the ability to be set up extremely low you can drop down both legs to their lowest setting to pitch the canopy really steep, allowing any snow or rain to simply fall right off, and once pegged out will give you some of the most secure shelter possible and on top of that once you are ready to pack up in the morning,  the fold up process takes just a couple of seconds.

Don’t go camping in the snow unprepared, make sure you take all the right gear to make quick weekend trips to the slopes comfortable and warm, and make sure you don’t miss one second of snow time this winter!
