Pick a rippa campsite this season!

Make sure your camp season goes of without a hitch by considering some seasoned pro’s camping tips and tricks for choosing, arriving and setting up camp!

Selecting a campsite

When you’ve hit the tracks in the past, you may have encountered a few issues when looking for a place to set up camp. Depending on the amount of people in your convoy, you may encounter certain issues like marked campsites being booked out or not big enough to facilitate your entire group.

One of the biggest advantages you can give yourself is to do some early researching on your destination, whilst it may seem a grueling task it is often a 5 minute phone call ahead of time to talk to the land manager and find out the situation with the campsites. Particularly in busy months making a quick call can secure you a solid campsite big enough for the whole crew, and suitable for everyone’s setup.

Some campsites have potential issues like not being able to set up right next to your vehicle, this is problematic when you are using a camp setup like a roof top tent, or sleeping underneath your vehicles awning in your swag. So calling ahead and confirming with the ranger at the campsite you will be armed with the best local knowledge on the destination.

Not all campsites are marked…..

Some of the best campsites we’ve stayed in are far from the crowds and well away from the beaten tracks, in destinations like this you may need to look at a quick campsite, that makes the least impact on the track and involves the least amount of land clearing possible.

The old saying ‘leave no trace’ will ensure that even if you need to set up your campsite in unconventional locations, that no one will be able to tell you were even there, this makes sure that firstly, no one steals and wrecks your secret spot, and secondly you don’t get access restricted from these locations.

To leave no trace, this involves making sure whatever you bought with you, gets packed back out in the back of your vehicle. Many 4WD’s can make good use of a Kings Dirty Gear Bag these are fully waterproof and the perfect way to stash all your empty cans and bottles with you (don’t forget to line the dirty gear bag with a bin liner to save cleanup later.

The other thing you can do to prevent making a mess and leaving obvious signs is the remains of your campfire. You don’t have to light your campfire on the ground, not only is it less efficient this way, it is a dead giveaway to people passing by at a later time, that someone at some stage used this spot to camp.

For this we recommend using a portable fire pit system like the Adventure Kings Camp Oven Stove, because this fire pit system is fully enclosed it 100% contains the ash from your campfire, so not only can you cook your favourite track side meals, right over the hot coals of your fire, but you can bring the ash to an appropriate receptacle when you get back to civilization.

This means you won’t leave an obvious big black fire pit hole at the location of your campfire, and no one will be the wiser.

One of the best setups for impromptu trackside campsites is a Roof Top Tent, purely because you can set one up wherever your vehicle is parked without worrying about clearing leaf litter and sticks from the ground, the other benefit is that as long as the parking spot you have your vehicle parked at isnt too steep an incline, you will be laughing!

It is always best to stay at recognized campsites, this way you impact the bush the least amount possible, however sometimes the best plans fall apart when you least expect them to, and for those moments a versatile camping system like those found at 4WD Supacentre will leave you wanting nothing, with all the facilities available wherever you are!
