Over the years we’ve done a heap of travelling to every part of Australia, and camped and 4WDed in all sorts of conditions. Below is a list of 10 items that every camper should carry their rear drawers to help be prepared for any eventuality. This is a must-read for all campers!

CAMPING KNIFE
One of the most useful bits of gear you can add to a set of storage drawers is a good sharp camping knife! We’re not talking Mick Dundee-type blades here, just a nice all-purpose blade that you can use for everything from opening cans of food to buttering a sanger. Keep a sharpening stone in your tuckerbox so you can keep it in top nick whenever it needs a bit of attention. Keep a knife in your rear drawers and handle just about any job.

FIRELIGHTERS
You should never go camping without a packet of firelighters in your rear 4WD drawers! They go hand-in-hand with the flint, and will kickstart a fire quickly. Crumble them up and sprinkle them over some dry leaves and bark and hit it with the flint – it’ll be the easiest-starting fire you’ll ever get going. Get really tricky by adding BBQ bricks to an empty egg carton – just light the carton and watch the fire kick off! These are a must-have for every set of Titan storage drawers.

RUBBER MALLET
It goes without saying that you should load your 4×4 drawers up with tools, and one of the best you can add is a rubber mallet. If you’ve ever bent a peg trying to setup camp, you’ll know what a good mallet can do for you. Metal-headed hammers are no good – rubber mallets let you knock pegs in with more force, exactly what you need in rocky terrain. Don’t forget to add yours to your 4WD drawers before you next head away camping.

BABY WIPES
Staying clean is the difference between a comfortable camping trip and a horrible one, and a pack of baby wipes in your storage drawers can be a huge help here. Doesn’t matter if you’re the toughest adventurer out there – a shower in a box is just what the doctor ordered sometimes. A couple of no-name boxes of baby wipes stuffed into your rear storage drawers will last forever and keep the whole family happy, even if you’re not camping near the water.

AXE AND BLOCK SPLITTER
Okay, this is kind of a two-for-one deal, but a good quality axe or hatchet, and ideally a block splitter too, are great tools to keep in your rear drawers for camping! You don’t have to spend the earth to get a decent axe and block splitter these days. In a pinch you can of course use the axe for both tasks, but any job’s made that much easier with the right tools. Store em in your Titan drawers and always be ready for a campfire.

WELDER’S GLOVES
A set of welders gloves take up next to no space in your rear drawers but are so essential. They’re useful for everything from stoking the campfire to putting your camp oven on or off the coals, you can’t beat a cheap set of welder’s gloves. Buy em from the hardware store for about $20, throw em into your rear 4WD drawers and you’ll never struggle around a campfire again.

TENT PEGS – DIFFERENT KINDS!
If your rear drawers aren’t full of spare tent pegs, you’re setting yourself up for camping failure! A bag with all different types of tent pegs, and extra guy ropes is without a doubt one of the most invaluable bits of gear you’ll carry. Make sure you carry sand pegs too. In a pinch on the beach, bury plastic bags full of sand and use them as anchor points for the guy ropes – making absolutely sure to dig them back up in the morning, of course. The more tent pegs in your storage drawers, the better!

LED STRIP LIGHTS
LED strip lighting take up bugger all room in your rear 4×4 drawers and can be installed almost anywhere. However, if you’re after uncompromised convenience, running LED strips along the length of your awning on its underside would have to top the list. The trick is to strategically position them for an even spread of light, then permanently mount them into place. It’s a good idea to use a weather proof plug to disconnect the wiring harness when the awning and lights are packed away in your rear drawers.

A GOOD CAMPING TORCH
We’d never go camping without a good quality LED camping torch and a couple of LED headlamps packed away in our rear storage drawers. Pretend you’re scared of the dark when it comes to buying lighting – buy good stuff, and buy as much as your bank balance will allow. LED is the only type of camp lighting worth investing in these days – gas lamps are fragile, halogen suck a lot of battery juice for the amount of light they put out. Grab a couple of head torches, and some of those bright buggers with the big magnet on the back – instant camp lighting. And don’t forget to throw some AA batteries in your storage drawers too, if your LED lights run on them – otherwise there’s not a whole lot of point carrying the LED lights!

SPARE MATCHES OR CIGARETTE LIGHTERS
The final thing we’d always keep in our rear storage drawers is a simple but essential one – some way to light your fire – and MULTIPLE options for that too! They always go missing, so more than one packet of matches or lighter is a must.
